Chapter 10 - The Tactical Breach

The acrid smell of ozone and gunsmoke flooded the wood-paneled office instantly as the tactical team poured through the shattered oak door. Their heavy combat boots pounded against the Persian rug, raising tiny clouds of ancient dust. The red laser sights from their assault rifles painted a chaotic web of crimson dots across the walls, the mahogany desk, and Sarah’s chest.

"Freeze! Stay away from the terminal!" barked the lead operative, a scarred man whose face was hidden behind a reinforced riot helmet. His voice was cold, mechanical, and amplified by an internal tactical speaker.

Sarah instinctively threw her arms protectively around the girl, shielding the impostor with her own body. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Don't touch her!" Sarah screamed, her voice cracking with fury and terror. "You've already stolen everything from us! Just leave us alone!"

The girl—who had answered to the name Clara for three long years—looked calmly past Sarah’s shoulder at the armed operatives. Her green eyes were completely devoid of fear. She reached out with a steady hand, her fingers hovering just inches from the glowing white biometric scanner that remained unlocked on the desk.

"They aren't here to talk, Mom," the girl whispered softly, her voice remarkably calm amid the chaos. "They're the cleanup crew. If they take this terminal, our minds are wiped permanently, and they'll harvest our neural architecture for the next corporate defense contract."

"Stand down, subject 4098-B," the lead operative commanded, taking a measured step forward, his rifle barrel locked directly on the girl’s head. "You are corporate property. Step away from the console or we terminate the physical host."

Sarah turned her head, glaring at the operative with a fierce, protective wrath that eclipsed her fear. "She is a human being!" Sarah yelled, her voice trembling with righteous indignation. "Kill me instead! Take my memories! Just let her go!"

"Negative, Mrs. Miller," the operative replied coldly, flicking the safety switch of his rifle off with an audible click. "Your neural link is already integrated with the core network. You're part of the harvest now."

The girl didn't hesitate. With lightning speed—a motion far too fast for a battered child—she slammed her palm down onto the glowing white biometric scanner.

A deafening alarm shrieked through the office, flashing strobing red and white emergency lights across the room. The computer monitors on the desk exploded in a cascade of sparks and shattered glass as the system feedback loop initiated.

"Initiating total network purge," a synthetic, automated voice echoed from the overhead speakers, drowning out the shouting of the guards. "Countdown to core meltdown: thirty seconds."

The lead operative cursed violently, raising his rifle to fire. But before his finger could squeeze the trigger, the floor beneath the tactical squad violently dissolved into a swirling vortex of glowing green digital code, swallowing the armed guards whole into the system void.

Sarah and the girl tumbled backward into the opening vortex, falling through an endless digital sky as the entire corporate facility collapsed around them.
