Chapter 5

The shovels struck wood with a dull, echoing thud that sent vibrations up their arms. Working together with frantic synchronization, Richard, Eleanor, and Leo clawed away the remaining soil until the smooth, light-colored lid of the casket was fully exposed beneath the glare of the car headlights. The white roses, now bruised and caked in mud, were scattered aside as Richard unlatched the heavy brass clasps on either side of the lid.
Leo’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He dropped to his knees in the mud, his hands shaking violently as he helped Richard lift the heavy lid. The hinges groaned in protest against the damp night air. As the lid swung open, a rush of cool, stagnant air escaped the sealed compartment.
Inside, resting upon a satin lining, lay Clara. Her face was as pale as marble, her dark hair framing features that looked impossibly peaceful, almost angelic. But the terrifying reality of her condition was unmistakable. Her lips had a faint bluish tint, and her skin was ice cold to the touch.
Eleanor fell to her knees beside the open casket, sobbing uncontrollably as she pressed her gloved hand against her daughter's cheek. "Oh, my sweet girl... my baby..." she choked out, her restraint finally shattering completely.
Richard froze, leaning over the casket with wide, terrified eyes. He placed two fingers against Clara's carotid artery, pressing down hard, searching for any sign of life. Seconds ticked by in agonizing silence, broken only by the patter of rain against the surrounding marble headstones. The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating.
"Nothing," Richard whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable grief. "I... I don't feel anything. She's gone, Eleanor. We're too late."
"No!" Leo shouted, pushing past Richard. He grabbed Clara’s limp wrist, ignoring the coldness of her flesh, and pressed his thumb firmly against her radial pulse point. He closed his eyes, filtering out the sound of the rain, concentrating entirely on his fingertips.

For ten agonizing seconds, there was only dead silence. Then, beneath his thumb, came a faint, impossibly sluggish thud. Thump.... pause.... thump.
"She's alive!" Leo yelled triumphantly, his voice breaking with tears of relief. "Her heart just beat! The metabolic stasis is still holding!"
