THE GIRL IN THE WHITE ROSES / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1

The cold American autumn rain lashed against the polished marble stones of Oakridge Cemetery, turning the freshly dug earth into a slick mire of dark mud. A pale young boy with messy dark hair and dirt smudges across his cheeks stood pinned by two heavy hands. Two private security guards, encased in black tactical gear and black baseball caps, gripped his arms with unyielding force. He struggled against them, his small frame trembling violently, his eyes red-rimmed and desperate. Just feet away stood a light-colored casket completely blanketed in pristine white roses, looking heartbreakingly pure against the gloom of the storm.

Facing the frantic boy was a middle-aged man in a sharp grey pinstripe suit, a crisp white shirt, and a black tie. A meticulously trimmed goatee framed a mouth pulled into a hard, unforgiving line. The man’s eyes were cold, reflecting a profound exhaustion mixed with raw, suppressed grief. Beside him stood a middle-aged woman in a sleek black dress, her dark hair plastered to her cheeks by the downpour. She held a black umbrella with white knuckles, her face frozen in absolute shock and terror as she stared at the boy.

The boy gasped for air, his chest heaving under a soaked grey t-shirt. He strained forward, ignoring the rough grip of the guards biting into his skin. His voice cracked with a desperate urgency that cut through the steady hum of falling rain.

"Sir, don't bury your daughter," the boy cried out, his words tumbling over one another. "She's not dead, she's in a coma."

The man in the pinstripe suit flinched, a muscle jumping in his jaw. For a fraction of a second, a flicker of doubt crossed his stern features before hardening into defensive fury. He took a sharp step toward the boy, his umbrella dipping to let the rain hit his face.

"Get him out of my sight," the man ordered, his voice deep, gravelly, and shaking with suppressed rage. "This sick game ends right now. Lower the casket."

The guards tightened their grip, dragging the boy backward as he screamed out warnings, pleading with the mourners to listen. The woman in the black dress dropped her umbrella, the black fabric rolling into the wet grass as she covered her mouth with both hands, her body shuddering violently. The heavy ropes creaked as the white roses began to descend into the cold earth.
