Chapter 8 - Descent into the Abyss

The beam of Lucas’s flashlight cut a harsh, piercing line through the swirling dust motes dancing in the damp, freezing air of the stairwell. The metal steps spiraled downward into the earth, echoing with every careful footstep they took. The temperature dropped drastically with every level they passed, their breath pluming in white puffs before vanishing into the gloom.
“How deep does this bunker actually go?” Lucas asked, his voice sounding hollow and distorted against the curved concrete walls. “We passed Sub-Level Six five minutes ago. According to the original naval blueprints, this facility ends at the coastline.”
“The blueprints you saw were heavily redacted, Major,” Marcus’s voice echoed from a few steps behind them, steady and authoritative. “During the Cold War, this installation wasn’t just a command center. It was a primary research hub for deep-sea electromagnetic phenomena. The government built a subterranean shaft straight down into the tectonic fault line.”
Sarah didn’t look back. Her eyes remained locked on the darkness below, her flashlight illuminating a rusted metal plaque on the wall that read: LEVEL 9: EXPERIMENTAL ANOMALY CONTAINMENT.
“We’re here,” Sarah whispered, coming to an abrupt halt on the steel landing.
Before them stood a heavy titanium door, its surface scorched and warped as if subjected to unimaginable heat. The central control panel was completely shattered, sparking intermittently with erratic blue electric arcs that hissed in the damp air.
Lucas stepped past Sarah, shining his light directly onto the scorched control panel. His breath caught in his throat.
“Look at the scorch marks,” Lucas said, pointing his trembling finger at the melted metal. “This wasn't caused by a short circuit. This was caused by an intense directional energy discharge from the inside.”
Sarah stepped closer, her eyes scanning the melted casing until they landed on a small, intact data port nestled beneath the wreckage.
“The backup terminal isn't destroyed,” Sarah realized, her voice tightening with urgency. “Someone bypassed the main console and wired an external rig directly into the sub-structural grid.”
Marcus pushed his way past them, his face hard as stone as he inspected the jury-rigged wiring. He reached out and touched a thick, fiber-optic cable pulsing with a strange, faint violet light.
“It’s not just an external rig,” Marcus said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “It’s a receiver. And it’s currently downloading classified naval launch codes directly to an unknown destination.”
Lucas stared at the pulsing violet cable, a cold dread washing over him.
“To who?” Lucas demanded. “Who is on the other end of that transmission?”
Marcus slowly turned his head to look at Sarah, his eyes reflecting the flickering violet light.

“The same entity that answered our distress call in nineteen-ninety-eight,” Marcus replied grimly. “And judging by the seismic feedback shaking the base right now... it just answered back.”
