Chapter 15 - Silence on the Tarmac

The blinding white light slowly dissolved into the warm, golden glow of the afternoon sun. The suffocating hum of the spatial anomaly vanished, replaced by the familiar, distant sound of seagulls crying over the expansive tarmac of Naval Station San Diego.

Inside the brightly lit officers' dining hall, the atmosphere was once again formal, quiet, and entirely mundane.

Lieutenant Commander Sarah Phibbs stood firmly beside a central table, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek bun, her dark Navy service dress uniform pressed with crisp precision. Her nametag read PHIBBS, gleaming under the fluorescent lights.

At the table, Captain Marcus Vance, fifty-five years old with distinguished grey hair, sat in his brilliant white Navy dress uniform. Next to him sat Major Lucas Miller, thirty-two years old, wearing his tan military uniform and smiling warmly as Sarah approached.

Marcus stood up, extended a hand, and shook Sarah’s professionally, exchanging a look of heavy, respectful recognition.

Lucas’s facial expression twisted from warmth into a fleeting moment of deep shock and confusion, his eyes darting between the two senior officers before he caught himself, blinking away a strange, lingering sense of déjà vu that he couldn't quite place.

“You two know each other?” Lucas asked quietly, his voice carrying a light, casual curiosity with no hint of the dark abyss that had nearly consumed them all.

Marcus didn't blink. He kept his gaze locked on Sarah before looking down at Lucas with a calm, untroubled expression.

“We’ve crossed paths,” Marcus responded evenly.

Sarah looked down at her polished boots, then back up at the two men, a subtle, genuine smile touching the corners of her mouth as the heavy weight of hidden stars finally lifted from her shoulders for good.

Outside on the tarmac, the harbor was calm, blue, and completely empty. The ghosts of Naval Station San Diego had finally found their rest, and the salute fell silent in a world that had been saved from the edge of eternity.

The horizon stretched out endlessly before them, clear, bright, and entirely their own.
