Chapter 7

The synthetic mask fell away, hitting the glass table with a soft thud, revealing not the young, distressed bridesmaid Chloe, but a hardened federal investigator with sharp, weathered features and eyes like polished steel. Julian staggered backward, his heels catching the edge of the plush rug as the terrifying realization of the trap closed in around him.

“Agent Miller?” Julian choked out, his voice cracking with disbelief. “You’ve been... all this time?”

“Since the day you deposited the first embezzled check into a shell company registered under a dead man’s social security number,” Miller said, stepping forward and clicking a pair of heavy titanium cuffs against her palm. “We didn't just stumble into your wedding reception by accident, Mr. Vance. We orchestrated the entire guest list to ensure you had nowhere left to run.”

Sarafina stood motionless, watching the scene unfold with a mixture of profound shock and lingering disbelief. She looked from Agent Miller back to Julian, whose carefully constructed world of corporate deception was rapidly dissolving into ash.

“You mean the wedding... the guests... all of it was a sting operation?” Sarafina asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Not all of it, Sarafina,” Miller said, glancing over with a sympathetic, professional nod. “Your grief was real. Your dedication to the Greenfield Foundation was real. But Julian’s paper trail led right to this penthouse, and the only way to get him to trigger the final asset transfer authorization was to let him think he had outsmarted the federal reserve at the altar.”

Julian let out a harsh, bitter laugh, shaking his head as he tried to regain even a shred of his composure.

“You think locking me up solves anything?” Julian snarled, his eyes fixed on Sarafina with pure malice. “The moment I’m taken into custody, an automated dead-man switch releases every single encrypted document regarding your father’s illicit overseas accounts to the international press. Your family name will be permanently destroyed, Sarafina. Everything he built will be labeled as criminal enterprise.”

Sarafina felt a cold chill run down her spine, but Victoria Sterling stepped out of the shadows near the private bar, holding a second tablet that displayed a live decryption feed.

“That dead-man switch was routed through a proxy server in the Cayman Islands, Julian,” Victoria said calmly, walking toward the center of the room. “A server that our cybercrimes division seized and wiped forty-eight hours ago.”

Julian’s face went entirely blank. He lunged forward in a desperate, final attempt to reach the main console, but Agent Miller was faster, tackling him across the glass table and pinning his arms behind his back with practiced precision. The heavy titanium cuffs snapped shut around his wrists with a definitive, metallic click that echoed through the silent penthouse.

As Miller hauled Julian to his feet, he locked eyes with Sarafina one last time, his expression twisting into a chilling mask of hatred.

“You think this is the end of the Greenfield secrets?” Julian hissed as he was dragged toward the elevator. “Check the corporate vault in Zurich before you celebrate, Sarafina. There’s something waiting for you there that will destroy everything you thought you knew about your father.”
