Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Elmwood ballroom cast a cold, blinding glare over the sea of high-society guests who had gathered to celebrate what they believed was a fairy-tale union. Sarafina stood frozen in her pristine white silk wedding gown, the intricate lace veil catching the faint draft of the air conditioning. Facing her was Julian, her new husband, whose sharp features were carved in stone beneath the glow of a tuxedo collar. In his steady hands, an open silver laptop defied every rule of marital harmony.

Julian’s voice cut through the heavy silence with the precision of a scalpel.

“Sarafina, $82,000,000.”

Sarafina felt the blood drain entirely from her face, her chest constricting as the reality of the digits on the screen sank in. She stepped back, her silk heels clicking sharply against the polished mahogany floor.

“I never approved this,” Sarafina said defensively, her voice trembling slightly before she caught herself.

Julian didn't blink. He angled the screen slightly, letting the ambient light catch the glowing rows of the corporate spreadsheet.

“You’re overreacting,” Julian said calmly, his tone devoid of any wedding-day warmth.

A murmur rippled through the front row of tables. Eleanor, Julian’s mother, sat motionless in a gold beaded dress, her manicured hand pressed hard over her mouth in absolute shock. A few feet away, Chloe, the head bridesmaid, clutched a bouquet of pale roses so tightly her knuckles turned translucent, her eyes darting between the bride and groom with undisguised distress.

Sarafina stared at the numbers. Eighty-two million dollars. It wasn't a wedding budget or a minor oversight; it was the exact sum liquidated from the charitable foundation her late father had spent his entire life building, funneled into an offshore shell corporation just hours before the ceremony began. Julian had used her digital signature, harvested from the prenuptial documents she had signed in good faith three nights prior.

“You hacked my trust,” Sarafina whispered, the rising panic in her chest threatening to choke her words. “You didn't just buy a partnership, Julian. You stole a legacy.”

Julian leaned in closer, his expression chillingly serene.

“I didn't steal anything, Sarafina. I simply secured our future before you could give it all away to people who don't deserve it.”

Before Sarafina could summon the breath to answer, the ballroom doors slammed open with a deafening bang, revealing three federal agents in dark suits flanked by local police.
