Chapter 2

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom rattled against their hinges as the lead federal agent strode down the center aisle, his badge catching the amber light of the chandeliers. The murmurs of the three hundred elite guests instantly dissolved into a suffocating, breathless quiet. Sarafina watched the figures approach, her mind racing to connect the sudden appearance of law enforcement with the astronomical sum glowing on Julian’s laptop screen. She glanced at Julian, expecting to see a flicker of panic, but her husband merely closed the laptop with a soft click, his expression as unreadable as polished granite.
“Julian Vance?” the lead agent asked, stopping just inches from the flower-strewn altar. “And Sarafina Vance?”
“We just finished the ceremony,” Julian replied smoothly, his voice carrying an unnatural composure that unnerved everyone within earshot. “Is there a problem with our marriage license, Officer?”
“It’s federal, Mr. Vance,” the agent said, stepping aside to let two officers flank the edges of the dais. “We have an emergency freeze order issued twenty minutes ago by the U.S. District Court. Eighty-two million dollars in unauthorized asset transfers from the Greenfield Foundation into a private holding account linked directly to your personal IP address.”
Chloe, standing paralyzed in her beige bridesmaid gown, let out a sharp gasp that cut through the silence. Eleanor clutched the edge of her gold beaded chair, her face turning an alarming shade of pale as the heavy implication of the federal intervention settled over the room. Sarafina felt the ground seemingly drop away beneath her silk-clad feet. Julian had not merely deceived her about the funds; he had orchestrated a trap that implicated them both, using her legal identity as the primary corporate officer of the foundation to absorb the fallout.
“I had nothing to do with this transfer,” Sarafina declared, stepping forward to address the agent directly, her voice ringing clear despite the terror gripping her heart. “My signature was forged. Look at the timestamps. I was at the rehearsal dinner.”
Julian turned his head slowly, looking down at his bride with a patronizing, gentle smile that made her blood run cold.
“Darling, don't make it worse on yourself,” Julian said smoothly, projecting innocence for the benefit of the surrounding crowd. “The stress of the wedding is clearly affecting your memory. You insisted on diversifying the portfolio this morning.”
The federal agent glanced between them, holding up a heavy tablet displaying a signed digital authorization stamp bearing Sarafina’s private cryptographic key.

“Mrs. Vance, your personal biometric key was used to authenticate the final wire at 3:14 PM,” the agent stated, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “You’re both coming with us.”
As the cold metal clicked around Sarafina’s wrists, Julian offered no resistance, extending his own hands with a chillingly serene smile as he whispered something softly into her ear.
