Chapter 7

With the immediate threat removed and Julian securely in police custody, the grand ballroom slowly began to empty of its remaining guests, leaving only the immediate family members who were dedicated to supporting Clara and Lily. The harsh, glaring lights of the reception hall were dimmed by the catering staff, replaced by the softer, warmer perimeter sconces that gave the vast space a more intimate and reassuring atmosphere.

Clara sat with Lily in a quiet corner booth upholstered in deep velvet, away from the lingering whispers of the distant relatives. A damp, cool cloth rested gently against Lily’s bruised arm, applied by Great-Aunt Beatrice, who had insisted on personally tending to the child as an act of penance for having initially doubted her word during Julian’s public accusation.

“There now, sweetheart,” Beatrice said softly, smoothing down the pearl-trimmed fabric of Lily’s pale dress with gentle, trembling fingers. “The bruising will fade in a few days, but your courage won’t. You stood your ground just like a true Vance.”

Lily offered a small, hesitant smile, comforted by the genuine warmth in the elderly woman’s voice. She leaned against Clara’s side, her eyelids growing heavy from the emotional exhaustion of the evening. The traumatic events of the past hour were beginning to recede, replaced by the safe, familiar comfort of her mother’s presence.

David walked over, holding two small paper cups of warm chamomile tea he had retrieved from the catering station. He handed one to Clara and set the other on the low table before pulling up a chair.

“The police took Julian down to the precinct for booking,” David reported quietly, keeping his voice low so as not to disturb Lily. “His financial records are being seized under emergency warrant. The forensic accountants are already finding a labyrinth of shell companies and unauthorized wire transfers. He won’t be walking out of custody anytime soon, and certainly won’t have access to family holdings ever again.”

Clara took a slow sip of the tea, feeling the warmth spread through her chest and calm the lingering tension in her muscles. “And the hotel management?”

“They’re mortified,” David said with a faint, tight smile. “The general manager personally apologized and offered full cooperation with our legal team. They’ve already preserved all the security footage, server logs, and audio transcripts. Julian’s attempt to frame Lily is documented from three different camera angles. His legal defense is practically nonexistent.”

“Good,” Clara said firmly, her eyes fixed on the gentle rise and fall of Lily’s breathing as the little girl finally drifted off into a safe, exhausted sleep against her shoulder. “I want an airtight case. Not just for the embezzlement, but for the deliberate endangerment and defamation of a child.”

David nodded in solemn agreement. He reached out, giving Clara’s hand a reassuring squeeze. “We’ll get justice, Clara. For both of you.”
