Chapter 3

The revelation hung heavily in the air, shifting the fragile balance of power within the ballroom. Uncle Arthur adjusted his glasses, his weathered face hardening as he looked from Clara to Julian. The older generation of the Vance family had always favored tradition and quiet conflict resolution, but public child endangerment and blatant framing crossed a line that even the most forgiving relative could not ignore.
“Is this true, Julian?” Arthur asked, his deep voice carrying the weight of decades of authority. “Did you pull a stunt like this during your own cousin’s wedding reception?”
Julian swallowed hard, his posture slumping just a fraction before he forced his shoulders back up. He shook his head with exaggerated disbelief, trying to muster a look of profound betrayal.
“Uncle Arthur, you can’t possibly believe her over me,” Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with a manufactured sense of injury. “Clara is grieving, she’s stressed, and naturally she’s defensive of her daughter. But logic matters. Why would I frame a six-year-old? It makes zero sense. Meanwhile, the missing jewelry was tracked directly to this exact spot.”
Lily buried her face into the soft fabric of Clara’s pale pink dress, her small shoulders shaking with quiet sobs. Clara gently stroked her daughter’s blonde hair, keeping her gaze locked on Julian. She saw the subtle tic in his jaw, the way his thumb continuously brushed against the side of the sleek black smartphone, desperate to access a specific app before anyone could confiscate the device.
“It makes absolute sense if you’re trying to hide the real recipient of the stolen items,” Clara countered, her voice calm and measured. She took a slow step forward, forcing Julian to retreat a step. “The digital ledger isn’t missing because Lily took it. It’s missing because you transferred the encrypted asset files to an off-shore wallet registered under a shell corporation. You used the wedding as cover to liquidate family assets, and you needed a scapegoat so nobody would check your pockets when the alarms tripped.”
Gasps rippled through the remaining family members. Great-Aunt Beatrice dropped her decorative lace handkerchief. The accusation was specific, detailed, and hit far too close to the financial rumors that had been quietly circulating about Julian’s recent lifestyle upgrades.
“That’s a complete fabrication!” Julian shouted, his composure finally cracking at the edges. His voice rose sharply, echoing against the high ceilings. “You’re throwing wild accusations around because you can’t accept that your kid has sticky fingers!”

“Don’t you dare raise your voice in front of my daughter,” Clara warned, her tone dropping into a dangerous, icy register.
Before Julian could fire back, the heavy double doors at the entrance of the ballroom clicked open. Footsteps echoed across the marble foyer, signaling that hotel security and, more importantly, Clara’s brother, David, had arrived ahead of schedule.
