Chapter 6

Julian’s sudden dash toward the terrace caught everyone off guard for a split second, but David was already moving. Anticipating the cowardly maneuver, David intercepted Julian’s path with a well-timed sweep that sent the younger man stumbling hard against a marble pillar before he could reach the glass doors. The two hotel security officers converged instantly, pinning Julian’s arms behind his back and pressing him firmly against the cold stone column.

“Don’t make this worse than it already is, Julian,” the police lieutenant said calmly, stepping forward to snap the cold steel handcuffs around Julian’s wrists with practiced efficiency.

Julian thrashed weakly, his expensive navy blue suit jacket ripping at the seam as he was subdued. His short brown hair was disheveled, falling across his sweaty forehead, and his once-smirking face was now twisted in a mask of panic and bitter resentment.

“You can’t do this!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking hysterically as he was hauled upright. “I’m a Vance! This is a family matter! We handle things internally!”

“You forfeited your right to family loyalty the moment you laid hands on my niece,” David replied coldly, pocketing his tablet. He watched without a shred of pity as the officers escorted Julian down the central aisle of the ballroom, past the horrified gasps of the remaining guests.

Clara stood motionless, her hand resting protectively on Lily’s blonde pigtails. She watched Julian disappear through the double doors, feeling a profound wave of exhaustion wash over her, mingled with a deep sense of vindication. The nightmare was finally being dismantled, piece by piece, but the emotional toll on her daughter remained her primary concern.

She knelt down immediately, lowering herself to Lily’s eye level. The little girl was still trembling slightly, her blue eyes wide and uncertain as she looked up at her mother.

“It’s over, sweetie,” Clara whispered softly, pulling Lily into a gentle, reassuring embrace. “You were so brave. Julian was wrong, everyone knows the truth now, and nobody is ever going to hurt you or blame you for something you didn’t do.”

Lily buried her face in Clara’s pale pink dress, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the residual fear finally began to drain from her small body. “I didn’t do it, Mommy,” she repeated, her voice small and muffled against Clara’s shoulder.

“I know you didn’t, my love. I know,” Clara murmured, kissing the top of Lily’s head.

Uncle Arthur walked over, his heavy footsteps slowing as he approached them. He knelt down beside Clara, his weathered face etched with profound regret. He extended a trembling hand, gently touching Lily’s uninjured arm.

“I am so sorry, Lily,” Arthur said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “And I’m sorry to you, Clara. We let ambition blind us to the kind of man Julian really was. That ends tonight.”
