Chapter 4

The name hung in the air like a physical blow. Elena froze, her mind racing back through years of family photo albums, holiday dinners, and quiet Sunday afternoons, searching for a face or a memory attached to the name Marcus Vance. Nothing came up.
“Marcus Vance?” Elena repeated, her voice laced with disbelief as she stepped closer to Clara to look at the document. “Who is that? I’ve never heard that name in my life.”
“Look at the date,” Arthur said, his voice barely audible. He leaned against the wall for support, his aging frame visibly trembling. “It was signed thirty years ago, before either of you were even born. It was an agreement made before I bought this land.”
Clara clutched the papers tightly against her chest, her earlier fury completely replaced by a desperate, frantic need for answers. She looked from her father to her mother, her eyes wide with betrayal.
“You lied to us,” Clara accused, her voice breaking on the high note. “You raised us in a house that wasn’t even yours? You let us fight over an inheritance that never belonged to this family in the first place?”
“We didn’t have a choice,” Martha spoke up for the first time, her voice steady despite her tear-stained cheeks. “Marcus Vance wasn’t just a name on a piece of paper, Clara. He was the man who saved your father’s life when we lost everything in the nineties. This house was built on a loan of honor, and that loan is coming due today.”
As Martha finished speaking, a low, rhythmic thud echoed from the front porch. Someone was knocking heavily on the front door, using a brass ring that hadn’t been polished in decades.
Elena turned slowly toward the door, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Before anyone could move to answer it, the heavy wooden door creaked open on its own, revealing an immaculately dressed man in a charcoal overcoat holding a leather briefcase.
“Good morning, Arthur,” the stranger said, stepping into the hallway and ignoring the packed pink suitcase entirely. “I’m here to take possession of the property on behalf of the Vance estate.”
