Chapter 1

The morning light cut sharp across the hardwood floor of the suburban hallway, illuminating dust motes dancing around the edges of a packed pink suitcase and several taped cardboard boxes.

Elena stood by the front door, her grey wool sweater pulled tight around her shoulders against the sudden chill of the autumn draft. Facing her was Clara, her younger sister, wrapped in a heavy maroon cardigan that seemed to weigh down her shoulders.

The air between them vibrated with a tense, brittle energy that had been building for months.

“This half of the house is mine now,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh, accusing whisper that echoed off the high ceiling.

Elena stared at her, her jaw tightening as she fought to keep her breathing steady.

“Your name isn’t on the deed,” Elena replied firmly, taking a half-step forward to close the distance between them.

Clara let out a bitter, humorless laugh, her eyes narrowing with a flash of pure malice. Before Elena could blink, Clara reached out and grabbed Elena’s face in a tight, bruising grip, her fingers digging fiercely into her skin.

Elena reacted on instinct, shoving Clara backward with enough force to send her stumbling against the stacked cardboard boxes.

Their parents, Arthur and Martha, rushed forward from the kitchen threshold, their faces pale with a mixture of shock and exhaustion. Arthur grabbed Clara by the arm while Martha stepped in front of Elena, their hands trembling as they tried to separate the two sisters.

“Then explain that to the judge!” Clara shouted, wrenching her arm free from her father’s grip.

As Martha held Elena back, her fingers brushed against the pocket of Elena’s sweater, where a folded piece of official stationery peeked out, bearing the letterhead of a local probate attorney neither sister had ever consulted.
