Chapter 10

The heavy pounding on the front door vibrated through the floorboards, shaking the teacups on the kitchen counter. The sheriff’s voice boomed through the narrow hallway again, identifying himself and demanding entry for an official execution of a property writ.

Arthur slumped into a kitchen chair, burying his face in his trembling hands as the devastating reality of his past actions finally caught up with him. The decades of lies, forged documents, and stolen inheritances were collapsing around him like a house of cards.

“Stay here,” Thomas said quietly to no one in particular, before turning and walking out of the kitchen toward the hallway.

Elena didn’t hesitate. She followed closely behind him, her heart pounding in her throat, while Clara and Martha hovered anxiously near the kitchen threshold, too terrified to step into the line of sight of the local authorities.

Thomas reached the front door first and turned the deadbolt, pulling the heavy oak door open. Standing on the porch was Sheriff Miller—no relation to their family—accompanied by two uniformed deputies and Julian, the estate executor, who stood off to the side with a clipboard in his hand.

“Good morning, Sheriff,” Thomas said smoothly, extending a hand that the lawman shook with practiced professional courtesy. “Everything is in order. The Vance estate is ready to take formal possession of the premises.”

Sheriff Miller looked past Thomas into the bright hallway, his eyes landing on the packed pink suitcase and the taped cardboard boxes. He offered a sympathetic, weary nod, having dealt with bitter family property disputes far too many times in his career.

“I’m sorry it had to come to this, Thomas,” the sheriff said, stepping across the threshold. “Arthur Miller has lived in this town for a long time, but a court-ordered lien is absolute. We need everyone off the property within the hour.”

Elena stepped up beside Thomas, her voice trembling slightly but carrying a fierce, unexpected resolve. “Sheriff, my father is having a severe medical episode inside. You can’t just throw an ailing senior citizen out onto the street without a proper transition period.”

The sheriff looked at Elena, his expression softening with genuine concern. “I’m sympathetic, Ms. Miller, but my orders come directly from the county judge’s chambers. Unless the new owner grants an explicit extension, my deputies have to clear the building.”

All eyes turned to Thomas. He stood silently in the center of the hallway, looking down at the pink suitcase before slowly raising his gaze to meet Elena’s defiant stare.

“I’ll grant the extension,” Thomas said slowly, a strange, unreadable glint in his eye. “Under one additional condition: Elena stays behind to sign the final inventory report while the rest of you pack up and leave immediately.”
