Chapter 3: The True Gathering

""You... you tricked us!"" Harper hissed, her voice dropping into a frantic whisper as she realized thirty influential town figures were watching every move. ""You let us host this party! You let us invite our clients!""

""I didn't trick anyone, Harper,"" Martha said, picking up her keys. ""You told me three days ago that this evening was an 'exclusive networking gala' and that the townspeople who built our community barn—the people who shoveled your driveway last winter when Greg was in the Bahamas—were not sophisticated enough to attend.""

Martha walked over to the bay window and pulled back the heavy velvet curtains.

Outside, coming up the long, snow-covered gravel drive, was a convoy of pickup trucks, old station wagons, and minivans.

Over sixty people—the local volunteer fire crew, the elderly widow Mrs. Gable from the creek, the high school carpentry teacher, and the families of the valley millworkers—stepped out into the crisp winter air, carrying large iron Dutch ovens, steaming platters of roasted ham, baskets of homemade sourdough loaves, and stoneware pots of butternut squash soup.

""Dinner is here, Harper,"" Martha said, a warm, radiant smile touching her lips for the first time that evening. ""And unlike yours, it was not purchased with borrowed pride.""

The back kitchen doors swung open, letting in a swirl of fresh snow, cold air, and the joyful, booming laughter of the townspeople.

""Merry Christmas, Martha!"" called out Chief Miller, setting a massive roaster pan of maple-glazed turkey directly onto the pristine island counter. ""The community kitchen in the valley finished the roast right on time!""

Harper backed away from the counter, clutching her designer clutch against her chest, staring in absolute horror as working men in flannel shirts and women in knitted sweaters filled the grand kitchen with genuine life.
