Chapter 13: The Passing Season

Five years passed.

The Berkshire valley had become a regional beacon of community resilience. The Vance Guild had trained over sixty master carpenters whose work was sought after across New England for historical restorations and sustainable timber builds.

Harper had become the full manager of the valley cooperative bakery, managing grain sourcing from local regenerative farms and establishing a free breakfast program for three rural elementary schools.

She and Greg had rebuilt their relationship not on the sandy soil of social ambition, but on the solid granite of shared labor, mutual respect, and quiet humility. They lived in a modest timber home they had built together on the edge of the east pasture, surrounded by wild apple trees and beehives.

One golden morning in late September, Martha did not come down to the kitchen at five-thirty.

Greg found her resting peacefully in her four-poster bed, her hands folded gently over the handmade patchwork quilt his grandmother had sewn eighty years ago. Her face was serene, smoothed of all earthly toil, a faint smile resting on her lips.

Beside her bed, sitting on the antique nightstand, was the heavy brass ring bearing the three barrel keys to the estate, resting atop a handwritten note:
