Chapter 4: The Sterling Mask Cracks

The heavy wrought-iron gates did not swing open politely; three black armored Suburban SUVs forced their way through the entryway, accompanied by two town cars bearing discreet government diplomatic plates.

Private security guards at the Sterling estate hurried forward with drawn flashlights, shouting protests. But before they could reach the lead vehicle, four tall men in tailored charcoal suits stepped out. Their posture was unmistakable—former federal tactical officers whose authority was cold, quiet, and absolute.

The rear door of the second vehicle opened.

Marcus Vance stepped onto the gravel.

He wore a bespoke charcoal wool overcoat over an unbuttoned dress shirt. He carried no umbrella, despite the light sea mist settling over the grounds. In his right hand, he held a weathered leather portfolio. His presence was not loud, yet the moment his boots hit the stone pathway, the chattering crowd on the terrace fell into absolute, suffocating silence.

Eleanor Sterling stiffened. She squinted through the ambient lighting, her hand fluttering to her throat. "What is the meaning of this trespassing? Security!"

None of her security guards moved. Their team leader had already seen the seal on the lead SUV's windshield and stepped aside, hands folded respectfully in front of him.

Marcus walked past the manicured hedges. He did not look at Eleanor. He did not look at the frozen, bewildered guests. His eyes remained fixed on Clara.

"Dad," Clara said, her voice cracking for the first time all evening as relief washed over her.

Marcus stopped before his daughter. With gentle, weathered fingers, he unbuttoned his wool overcoat and draped it softly around her shoulders, shielding her torn gown and sheltering her swollen abdomen from the chill.

"I have you, Clara," Marcus said quietly. "Nobody touches my girl."
