Chapter 12: A Father’s Legacy

Winter arrived in Woodstock with a gentle, heavy snowfall that blanketed the pines in thick white down.

On a freezing Tuesday morning in early January, Clara went into labor. Marcus drove her to the regional medical center in Burlington through cleared country roads, his hands steady on the wheel, humming an old Celtic lullaby that Clara’s mother used to sing.

Six hours later, in a quiet birthing suite overlooking snow-capped mountain ridges, Clara gave birth to a healthy, dark-haired boy.

Marcus held his grandson against his chest, tears slipping silently into his gray beard. "He has your eyes, Clara. Big, calm, and seeing right through everything."

"What should we name him, Dad?" Clara whispered from the bed, exhausted but glowing with profound peace.

Marcus smiled down at the infant. "Names should carry a compass, not a cage. Name him for what you wish him to cherish."

Clara touched the baby's tiny, grasping fingers. "Leo. Leo Marcus Vance. Leo means heart. And courage."

Two days later, back at the farmhouse, Clara received a small parcel with no return address, postmarked from Brooklyn.

Inside was a small, beautifully carved wooden music box shaped like a sailboat. Tucked beneath the lid was no grand apology—merely a note written on plain notebook paper:

May you like

"May you always sail with the wind of your mother's grace."

Clara wound the small brass key. The music box played a simple, clear rendition of Brahms’ Lullaby, ringing softly through the warm cedar halls.
