Chapter 11: Shattered Alliances

In November, Eleanor Sterling appeared unannounced at Julian’s dispatch office in Queens.

She wore a worn camel-hair coat, her hair poorly dyed, her eyes hollow with bitter resentment. She slammed an envelope down on Julian's cluttered metal desk.

"Sign this immediately," Eleanor demanded. "My lawyer says that because the baby is born of a Sterling marriage before the decree is finalized, we can petition for joint guardianship through a surrogate claim in Delaware. Marcus Vance would pay fifty million dollars to settle out of court rather than let us parade his daughter through tabloid litigation!"

Julian looked at the papers. Then he looked up at his mother.

The woman who had once terrified him, whose approval he had traded his soul to obtain, suddenly looked tiny, pathetic, and fundamentally hollow.

"Get out, Mother," Julian said softly.

"What did you say to me?" Eleanor gasped. "I am your mother! Everything I did was to secure your inheritance!"

Julian stood up. He had lost twenty pounds; his jawline was sharp, his eyes shadowed, but for the first time, his posture was straight.

"You destroyed our family because you worshipped appearances," Julian said with calm finality. "You taught me to measure people by their utility, and it turned me into a monster who abandoned his pregnant wife on our wedding night. I will never file a motion against Clara. If you ever contact her, her father, or my child again, I will submit an affidavit to the federal bankruptcy trustee detailing the overseas trusts you hid in the Cayman accounts."

Eleanor stumbled backward, clutching her chest. "You wouldn't dare betray your own blood!"

"My blood is in Vermont," Julian answered quietly. "And I have betrayed it enough."
