Chapter 2: The Crimson Line

Julian’s reaction was purely primal. Seeing Clara’s fingers brush against his terrified son’s cheek triggered a tidal wave of protective fury.

"Don't you ever touch my son again!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing intensity that vibrated through the floorboards.

Clara smirked, her eyes gleaming with malice. "He needs to learn toughness, Julian. Just like you did in the basement."

Julian saw red. The years of psychological torment, the midnight lectures, and the cold, unyielding cruelty boiled over in a fraction of a second. With a flat palm, Julian struck Clara across the face. The sharp crack of skin meeting skin echoed like a gunshot through the dining room. Clara staggered backward, her eyes widening in genuine shock before she lost her balance and crashed hard onto the hardwood floor.

Gasps erupted from the remaining guests. Sarah pulled Leo tighter against her chest, her eyes wide with horror as she looked at Julian’s trembling hand.

Julian stood frozen, staring down at his mother sprawled near the dining room table. A thin streak of crimson blood trickled from the corner of Clara’s mouth. She didn't cry out. She didn't scream. Instead, she slowly turned her head, spat a drop of blood onto the pristine wood, and began to laugh. A low, raspy chuckle that sent a cold shiver straight down Julian’s spine.

"You finally did it," Clara wheezed, pushing herself up on one elbow while glaring up at her son with triumphant malice. "You struck the matriarch. You've just signed the eviction notice for this entire family."

Julian’s stomach dropped. He looked at his hand, then at Sarah, who was already backing away toward the kitchen door with Leo. The guests were scrambling for their coats, murmuring frantically among themselves as they fled the disastrous scene.

"Julian, what have you done?" Sarah whispered, her voice trembling as she scooped Leo into her arms. "She’s going to destroy us. You know what she holds over your father's estate."

Clara stood up slowly, dusting off her grey pants with deliberate calmness. She didn't look injured; she looked empowered. She walked past Julian without a glance, heading straight toward the grand hallway closet.

"Pack your bags, Julian," Clara called out over her shoulder, her voice unnervingly steady. "The federal auditors will be here by sunrise, and they'll find the ledger in the study."
