Chapter 13: The Final Bargain

Agent Miller stared at Julian for a long, tense moment, measuring the young man's resolve. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a sterile white glow over the damp concrete floor of the sub-basement.

"State your condition, Mr. Vance," Agent Miller said finally, motioning for the armed officers to lower their weapons slightly.

"Full immunity for Sarah and Leo," Julian said without a single second of hesitation. "They had no part in the syndicate, the shell companies, or the cover-ups. They leave this house tonight, with clean records and complete protection, and I will hand over the flash drive, the journal, and the bank routing numbers right now."

Sarah gasped, grabbing Julian’s arm. "Julian, no! We stay together. If you go down, we go down with you. We agreed on this!"

"No, Sarah," Julian said softly, turning to look at her with deep, agonizing love in his eyes. "My father stayed, and he lived a nightmare. I stayed, and I almost let it destroy our son. You and Leo are walking out of here tonight. That is not negotiable."

Leo looked up at his father, his pale face tight with emotion. For the first time all day, the eight-year-old boy’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. He let go of the wooden puzzle, wrapped his small arms around Julian’s waist, and buried his face in his light blue dress shirt.

Julian wrapped his arms around his son, closing his eyes as a single tear slipped down his cheek.

Agent Miller looked at the family, then down at the flash drive in Leo’s small hand. A flicker of reluctant respect crossed the veteran investigator's face.

"Deal," Agent Miller said firmly. "Sarah and Leo will be escorted off the property immediately by federal marshals, and their records will be sealed under witness protection clearance. But you, Julian, are coming with us for questioning."

Julian nodded slowly. He knelt down, unbuttoning his cuffs and gently pulling Leo back.

"Be brave, buddy," Julian whispered, kissing the top of his son’s messy light brown hair. "Take care of your mother."

Sarah sobbed softly as two federal agents gently guided her and Leo toward the stairs. Leo looked back once before ascending into the light, his small hand clutching the flash drive tightly.

As the heavy metal door shut above them, Julian stood alone in the sub-basement with Agent Miller, handing over the leather journal without a single word of regret.

"Let's go," Julian said, holding out his wrists for the handcuffs.

Agent Miller didn't snap the cuffs on immediately. Instead, he pulled a small white envelope from his coat pocket and handed it to Julian.

"Before we go upstairs, Mr. Vance... you might want to read this letter that was intercepted at the front gate ten minutes ago."
