Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

The heavy maple dining room table shook violently under the force of Arthur’s rage. Clara’s shrill voice still echoed against the framed American flag hanging crookedly on the pale yellow drywall.
"Serve the guests right now!" Clara demanded again, her finger jabbing toward the eight-year-old boy trembling on the wooden stool.
Leo clutched the black frying pan like a shield, his pale skin stark against the dark metal. Julian, wearing his dust-stained light blue dress shirt, felt the hot blood rush to his ears. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the table.
"He is an eight-year-old child, Mother," Julian growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register that made the quiet guests freeze in their seats. "He is not your kitchen slave, and he is not a soldier in your pathetic little army."
"He bears the family name, Julian," Clara snapped back, stepping closer with her chin raised in haughty defiance. "Duty comes before comfort. This household has standards, whether your modern sensibilities approve or not."
Beside Leo, Sarah buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with stifled panic as the suffocating tension in the room reached its absolute limit. Julian stared at his mother with eyes full of years of suppressed resentment. The air grew thick, smelling of roasted meat and bitter vinegar.
"Standards?" Julian muttered, his gaze locking onto Clara’s cold, calculating eyes. "You call this abuse a standard? You’ve terrorized this house for decades, and it ends tonight."
Without another word, Julian snatched a heavy ceramic bowl from the center table and hurled it across the room. It shattered against the wall inches from Clara’s head, showering the polished hardwood floor with porcelain shards.
"Everyone get out of my house right now!" Sarah screamed, her voice cracking as she bolted from her chair to pull Leo down from the stool, shielding him in her arms.
Clara didn't even flinch at the flying ceramic. She merely smiled a cold, venomous smile that twisted Julian’s gut.

"You think you can banish me from my own blood, Julian?" Clara whispered, stepping directly into his personal space. "You don't even know half of the secrets buried beneath this very floorboards."
Julian’s breath hitched in his throat as Clara reached out her trembling, age-spotted hand toward Leo’s face.
