Chapter 9: An Unexpected Ally

Back in the holding cell, Clara paced the concrete floor, her mind spinning with frustration. The legal system had effectively tied her hands, leaving her at the mercy of a stacked deck. Marcus had done his best, but without judicial backing, their private investigator wouldn't even be allowed near the cottage doors to collect the vital brass shavings.
Then, the heavy metal door at the end of the hall swung open. It wasn’t Marcus returning with more bad news. Instead, a tall man in a dark trench coat walked down the aisle, stopping directly in front of Clara’s cell. He removed his fedora, revealing sharp gray eyes, weathered skin, and a scar running along his jawline. It was Detective Ray Miller—no relation—a veteran homicide investigator who had recently transferred to the county’s internal affairs division.
“Clara Miller?” Ray asked, his voice gravelly and low.
“Yes,” Clara said warily, stepping away from the bars. “Who are you? Are you with the prosecutor's office?”
“Negative,” Ray said, pulling a small leather notebook from his coat pocket. “I’m off the clock, but I’ve been reviewing the initial police report filed by Officer Vance regarding your arrest. Something about the timeline didn’t sit right with my professional instincts.”
Clara gripped the metal bars, her heart skipping a beat. “What do you mean?”
“The initial call to 911 wasn’t placed by Julian Blackwood,” Ray explained, leaning closer so his voice wouldn't carry down the hall. “It was placed from an encrypted satellite phone registered to a shell corporation offshore. That phone routed through a relay tower located three miles away from the estate at 4:00 AM. Yet, the police report claims officers were already on the scene when Julian called them in person at 6:30 AM.”

Clara stared at the detective, her breath catching in her throat. “The police were already there before Julian ‘discovered’ the theft?”
“Exactly,” Ray nodded, flipping open his notebook. “Officer Vance and his partner were dispatched to the Blackwood grounds two hours before any official burglary report was logged into the central database. That means the arrest was pre-staged. You weren’t caught red-handed; you were ambushed according to a script written hours in advance.”
