Chapter 4: Into the Cruiser

The heavy rear door of the police cruiser opened with a metallic click that echoed harshly across the paved courtyard. The two officers guided Clara toward the vehicle, their grips firm but respectful. Her beige dress caught on the doorframe, and she paused for a fraction of a second, looking back one last time at the grand stone pillars of the Blackwood mansion.
Julian had already begun walking back toward the main entrance, his tall silhouette cutting a sharp line against the sprawling white facade. The two bodyguards followed closely behind him, their black suits blending into the dark tint of the SUV windows. Only Luka remained behind, standing near the exact spot where the yellow paper had been found. The large gray dog watched the cruiser door close, its ears perked forward in quiet attention.
Inside the back seat, the air smelled of stale coffee and plastic. The partition screen separated Clara from the front seat, trapping her in a claustrophobic cage of gray upholstery. As Officer Vance slid into the driver’s seat and adjusted his rearview mirror, Clara caught a reflection of her own face. Her hair was a tangled mess, her expression hollowed out by shock, yet beneath the exhaustion, a quiet resolve was beginning to take root. They could lock her away, they could forge her handwriting, and they could marshal all the wealth in the county against her, but they could not erase the truth.

The cruiser engine rumbled to life, vibrating through the chassis and into Clara’s bones. As the vehicle rolled down the long, tree-lined driveway, Clara pressed her forehead against the cool glass of the window. The grand estate slowly receded into the distance, swallowed by the morning fog and the sprawling ancient oaks.
She thought about the eastern wing, the private archive room, and the specific sequence of events that led to this morning. Someone inside that house was terrified of what she had discovered last Tuesday while cross-referencing the 1994 estate acquisition records. She hadn’t thought much of it at the time—just dusty ledgers and forgotten property deeds. But now, the pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. The missing diamonds weren’t a simple theft; they were a smokescreen to cover up a much older, much darker secret buried deep within the Blackwood archives. And she held the key to unearthing it, if she could survive what came next.
