Chapter 12: The Master Key Server

David Chen sank heavily into an ergonomic desk chair, running a trembling hand over his face. The glow of multiple monitors illuminated the dark corners of the cabin, casting an eerie blue light across his features. For a long time, the only sound was the crack of burning pine logs in the stone fireplace.

“Clara Miller,” Chen muttered, shaking his head. “She was always so meticulous about the paper records. She wouldn’t steal a paperclip, let alone million-dollar diamonds.”

“She didn't,” Ray said, leaning against the edge of the desk. “And you’re the only person alive who can prove how they did it. I need the raw server logs from the Blackwood network, specifically the root-level commands executed between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM last Tuesday.”

Chen looked up, a wave of fear washing over his tired eyes. “Ray, you don't understand. Those servers are encrypted with military-grade protocols. Extracting those logs requires direct physical access to the main terminal room in the basement of the Blackwood mansion, or an active master encryption key.”

“Do you have the key?” Ray asked sharply.

Chen hesitated, sliding open the bottom drawer of his desk. He reached past a tangle of old power cables and pulled out a small, encrypted USB drive wrapped in anti-static foam. “This was my master administrative override key. They forgot to deactivate my hardware certificate when they fired me. But using it leaves a digital signature that pings their central security hub instantly.”

“Which means we have a very small window before their private security team realizes someone is copying the data,” Ray said, taking the drive from Chen’s outstretched hand. “We don’t need to hack their whole system. We just need the specific transaction ledger for badge access and remote shell execution.”

Chen nodded slowly, standing up from his chair. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a handwritten slip of paper containing a sequence of cryptographic command strings. “Type these commands into the terminal once you access the local substation box near the south garden gates. It will bypass the firewall without triggering an alarm.”

Ray pocketed the drive and the paper, locking eyes with the former technician. “Thank you, David. You just gave an innocent woman her life back.”

“Just make sure Julian Blackwood doesn’t walk away from this,” Chen whispered, watching the detective head back toward the door. “Men like him think laws are just suggestions written for everyone else.”
