Chapter 8 - The Press Conference

The grand ballroom of the Sterling Tower had been hastily transformed into a makeshift press conference venue, its crystal chandeliers casting brilliant arcs of light over a sea of flashing camera strobes and thrusting microphones. Dozens of journalists from every major financial publication, network, and wire service packed the room to near suffocation, their urgent murmurs creating a low, restless roar that echoed off the mahogany walls.

At the center of the elevated stage stood a long podium draped in the navy-blue banner of the newly formed Sterling-Pendelton Asset Trust. Resting on the edge of the podium was a sleek leather binder containing the complete, unredacted audit of Julian Sterling’s financial crimes.

Arthur Pendelton stepped up to the microphone first, raising his hand slightly to quiet the frantic shouting of the press corps. The camera shutters clicked like a swarm of mechanical locusts, blindingly bright and relentless.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur began, his baritone voice cutting through the noise with absolute authority. "Effective 8:00 AM today, Sterling Enterprises has officially ceased operations under its former leadership. All executive assets, real estate holdings, and subsidiary accounts have been transferred to a court-appointed receivership following the discovery of widespread systemic fraud, embezzlement, and asset concealment."

A chaotic wave of shouting erupted instantly from the front row. A reporter from the Wall Street Journal thrust his hand into the air, shouting over the din. "Mr. Pendelton! Is it true that Julian Sterling was arrested inside his own corporate vault an hour ago? What role did his wife play in this sudden collapse?"

Arthur paused, stepping back from the microphone just an inch and gesturing toward the side curtain. "To answer your questions regarding the founding vision and structural reorganization of this company, I yield the floor to the majority shareholder and chairwoman of the board: Clara Sterling."

The moment the name was spoken, the room went dead silent. The collective intake of breath from fifty journalists sounded like a sudden gust of wind through a dry forest.

Clara walked out from behind the velvet curtain, stepping gracefully into the center of the stage. She wore a tailored charcoal blazer over a crisp white silk blouse, her copper-red waves falling in smooth, elegant lines around her shoulders. She wore no jewelry save for a simple platinum band on her left ring finger—the one she had worn before Julian ever handed her the diamond necklace that symbolized his deceit.

She walked to the podium with absolute poise, looking out over the blinding sea of cameras without flinching. She placed her hands flat on the wooden surface, leaning in slightly toward the primary microphone.

"My name is Clara Vance," she began, her voice steady, clear, and resonant. "Not Clara Sterling. As of this morning, my marriage has been dissolved, and the man who once called himself the sole architect of this empire is facing federal indictment for the systematic theft of millions of dollars from public and private trusts."

A flashbulb went off directly in her eyes, but she didn't blink. She reached into her folder and pulled out a single sheet of paper, holding it up for the cameras to capture in crisp, undeniable detail.

"For five years, I was told my place was in the background," Clara continued, her eyes locking onto the primary network camera broadcasting live across the nation. "I was told I was a dependent, a ornament, a maid. But today, the world is going to learn a very simple lesson about men who build their houses on stolen foundations."

Before she could read the first line of the financial audit, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom banged open with a deafening crash, and a tall, disheveled figure forced his way past the security guards, shouting at the top of his lungs.
