Chapter 1 - The Descent from Grace

Julian stood so close that Clara could feel the hot, bitter rush of his breath against her cheek. His handsome face was contorted into an ugly, cruel mask of absolute disdain, the dark hair falling slightly across his furrowed brow. The opulent foyer of their penthouse felt suffocating, weighed down by the sudden, brutal shift in their marriage.

"You’re not my wife," Julian shouted, his voice vibrating with venom as he spat the words inches from her face. "You’re the maid now. Earn your keep."

Clara looked at him, her heart hammering a fierce, steady rhythm against her ribs, but her outward expression remained a mask of chilling tranquility. The diamond necklace and earrings she wore—family heirlooms Julian had once gifted her with grand declarations of eternal devotion—glinted coldly under the crystal chandelier. She smoothed the fabric of her light blue slip dress, feeling the silk cool against her skin.

"All right," Clara said calmly, a faint, enigmatic smile touching the corners of her lips. "I understand perfectly."

Without another word, she turned her back on him, her copper-red waves catching the amber light. Her hand reached down to grasp the telescoping handle of a rose gold suitcase on wheels, the hard-sided shell gleaming like a beacon of rebellion against the dark hardwood floors. She pulled the bag forward, preparing to cross the threshold she had maintained for five years.

Julian’s face flushed a deep, mottled red, disbelief warring with sudden, unacknowledged panic. "Where do you think you're going with that luggage?" he shouted, his voice cracking slightly on the high note.

Beside them, Martha, the household manager who had silently watched the confrontation from the shadows of the arched doorway, gasped. The middle-aged woman in the crisp black blazer raised both hands, pressing them tightly over her mouth to stifle a cry of pure, unadulterated shock.

Clara paused, turning her head just enough to meet Julian’s wide, furious eyes. Her gaze was steady, piercing, and completely devoid of the submission he expected.

"I don’t live here anymore," Clara spoke firmly, her voice carrying a quiet finality that chilled the room. "And neither does your wife."

May you like

Julian laughed harshly, taking a step forward to block her path, but Martha lowered her hands slowly, her eyes wide as she reached into her blazer pocket and pulled out a heavy, legal-looking envelope that made Julian freeze in his tracks.
