Chapter 10 - The Transfer of Power

The federal marshals didn't rush. They moved with the cold, mechanical efficiency of men who had seen a thousand desperate men crash from the heights of wealth into the gray reality of federal custody. They hauled Julian to his feet by his upper arms, ignoring his muffled, ragged gasps as he tried to plant his heels against the carpet.
"Let’s go, Mr. Sterling," the lead marshal said, his voice deep and flat. "Your transport is waiting in the basement loading dock."
Julian’s eyes darted frantically across the room, seeking a sympathetic glance from the dozens of reporters whose lenses were recording his every micro-expression. But there was no pity in the room—only the cold, hungry gaze of an industry eager to consume its own. As the marshals dragged him past the second row of chairs, Julian managed to twist his head around, fixing Clara with a final, venomous glare.
"You won't keep it," Julian hissed through clenched teeth, spittle flying from his lips. "The board will tear you apart. Without me, you’re just a woman hiding behind a dead man's trust!"
Clara didn't blink. She watched him disappear through the double doors, the heavy oak panels swinging shut with a dull thud that signaled the definitive end of an era.
The ballroom remained suspended in a heavy, electrified silence for three full seconds before the cacophony of shouting questions resumed with twice its previous intensity. Reporters surged forward against the velvet rope barrier, thrusting their microphones toward the stage like grasping hands.
"Madam Chair! What are your immediate plans for the company's remaining assets?"
"Will you be renaming Sterling Enterprises to remove his name entirely?"
"Are there other executives implicated in the federal indictment?"
Arthur Pendelton stepped back up to the microphone, raising a single hand to restore order. "Written statements containing the complete restructuring roadmap will be distributed at the exits. The board will take no further questions at this time."
Clara turned away from the podium, leaving Arthur to field the relentless wave of media inquiries. She walked off the stage and through the side curtain, where Martha was waiting with a fresh leather folio and a secure mobile phone.
"The federal prosecutor’s office just called," Martha said, walking beside Clara as they moved down the private corridor toward the executive elevators. "They’ve executed the search warrants on Julian’s mother’s estate in Greenwich. They recovered three safety deposit boxes containing bearer bonds and offshore account keys."
"And the family foundation assets?" Clara asked, sliding her phone into her pocket as the private elevator doors chimed and slid open.
"Fully recovered and redirected back into the Vance Trust," Martha confirmed, stepping into the car behind her. "The legal team expects the formal asset forfeiture hearing to conclude by the end of the week. You’ll be the sole controlling shareholder with zero encumbrances."
Clara pressed the button for the forty-second floor, watching the digital display begin its upward climb. Her reflection stared back at her from the dark glass panel of the door—composed, steady, and completely unburdened by the past.
"Good," Clara murmured, leaning back against the cool wood paneling. "Then it’s time to start the audit on the subsidiary accounts in Zurich."
Martha paused, her hand hovering over her tablet as a strange, unread notification popped up on the screen. She tapped the icon, her brow furrowing deeply as she read the encrypted message.

"Clara," Martha said, her voice dropping into a sudden, tense whisper. "You need to see this. The Zurich accounts weren't just holding embezzled funds. They were tied to a third party we didn't account for."
