Chapter 6

The afternoon sun cast long, amber rays across the dusty floorboards of the apartment as Amy spent hours organizing her files, cross-referencing Julian’s illicit transactions with public property records. Marcus had departed an hour earlier, slipping out the back service stairs to avoid drawing attention from the street. The apartment was once again wrapped in profound silence, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator and the occasional rumble of a passing delivery truck outside.

A sharp, authoritative knock sounded at the front door. It was entirely different from Marcus’s nervous rapping earlier; this knock was heavy, rhythmic, and demanding, the kind of knock delivered by someone accustomed to having doors opened immediately.

Amy didn't flinch. She closed the manila folder containing the municipal audit reports, slid the encrypted flash drive into her pocket, and walked deliberately toward the entryway. She didn't bother looking through the peephole. She already knew who was standing on the other side of the threshold.

She turned the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

Margaret Vance stood in the narrow hallway, her tailored black blazer unbuttoned, looking slightly fatigued yet carrying an unyielding aura of command. Behind her, standing a respectful two paces back, was Julian’s personal legal counsel, a sharp-faced man named Henderson clutching a leather briefcase.

"May I come in, Amy?" Margaret asked, her voice steady, lacking the desperate plea from the ballroom but carrying a heavy weight of familial authority.

"The apartment is small, Margaret, and the furnishings aren't quite up to Vance standards," Amy replied evenly, making no move to step aside. "State your business."

Margaret sighed softly, her eyes scanning Amy’s face with a mixture of assessment and lingering affection. "Julian is beside himself. The emergency injunction was filed this morning, and Henderson here informs me that if this escalates to a federal probe, the damage to the family name will be catastrophic. We didn't come here to fight you, Amy. We came to offer a resolution."

Henderson stepped forward slightly, offering a tight, professional smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Mrs. Vance, Mr. Julian Vance is prepared to drop all asset freezes, secure a private trust in your name—and the child's name—totaling five million dollars, on one condition. You sign a comprehensive nondisclosure agreement, relinquish the engagement ring and any physical or digital collateral you removed from the estate, and relocate quietly to a residence outside the country."

Amy listened to the offer without a flicker of emotion on her face. Five million dollars. To anyone else in this run-down neighborhood, it was a lottery win, a ticket to instant luxury and perpetual security. To Julian and his family, it was a modest nuisance fee paid to sweep a dangerous scandal under the rug.

"Exile and silence," Amy said quietly, her eyes locking onto Margaret’s gaze. "That’s all I’m worth to you. A severed tie and a paid-off disappearance."

"It's protection, Amy," Margaret corrected, her tone sharpening slightly. "You cannot fight a dynasty. Even if you hold damaging files, the legal machinery at Julian's disposal will grind you down until you have nothing left. Take the settlement. Secure your future and the baby's future. It is the only rational path forward."

Amy stood tall in the doorway, her light blue gown replaced by a simple gray sweater and dark trousers, yet she projected a power far greater than the tailored elegance of the older woman before her. She reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing against the cold metal of the encrypted flash drive.

"Tell Julian that my silence is not for sale," Amy said, her voice ringing clear and absolute in the confined hallway. "And tell him that if his legal team attempts to enforce that fraudulent asset freeze tomorrow morning, I won't just hand files to a prosecutor. I will walk through the front doors of the federal courthouse myself."
