Chapter 10

The courtroom was vast, paneled in dark, polished mahogany that smelled faintly of old paper and floor wax. Overhead, brass chandeliers cast a solemn, amber light over the rows of oak spectator benches. Judge Thomas sat high upon the elevated mahogany bench, adjusting his spectacles as he reviewed the morning docket files spread out before him. He was a man in his late fifties with thinning gray hair and a stern, expressionless face that projected bureaucratic authority.

Julian and Henderson sat at the plaintiff’s table on the right side of the aisle. Julian’s posture was rigid, his jaw clenched tight as he occasionally glanced toward the back of the room where Marcus Chen sat quietly in the last row, holding a small notepad. On the left side of the aisle sat Amy, entirely alone, her manila envelope resting squarely in the center of the walnut table.

"Case number 4482-B, Vance versus Vance," Judge Thomas announced, his voice echoing flatly through the cavernous room. "We are here today to hear the emergency motion for asset freezing and protective custody filed by the plaintiff."

Henderson rose immediately, adjusting his tie with practiced confidence. "Your Honor, we represent Julian Vance. We are requesting an immediate emergency injunction to freeze all personal assets and accounts associated with the defendant, Amy Vance, due to credible evidence of asset concealment and the theft of high-value corporate property, specifically a rare diamond necklace valued in excess of one million dollars."

Judge Thomas glanced down at the petition, nodding slowly. "And the defendant’s response?"

Amy stood up smoothly, buttoning her black trench coat as she addressed the bench. Her voice was steady, calm, and carried across the quiet courtroom with absolute clarity.

"Your Honor, the plaintiff's motion is not only legally baseless; it is a retaliatory maneuver designed to conceal corporate embezzlement and judicial compromise," Amy stated, her hands resting lightly on the edge of the walnut table.

Judge Thomas frowned, his expression hardening. "Mrs. Vance, unless you have certified evidence directly addressing the alleged asset concealment, I am inclined to grant the plaintiff’s injunction."

"I have more than evidence regarding asset concealment, Your Honor," Amy said, picking up the manila envelope and walking deliberately toward the clerk’s desk, placing the documents down with a soft thud. "I have certified bank records proving that three weeks ago, a quarter-million-dollar anonymous donation was funneled from a shell corporation owned by Julian Vance’s holding company directly into your personal re-election campaign trust."

The courtroom went instantly dead silent. A collective intake of breath swept through the gallery.

Judge Thomas’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson. He slammed his hand down on the wooden bench. "Counsel! What is the meaning of this insolent slander? I will hold you in contempt of court—"

"You can hold me in contempt, Your Honor," Amy interrupted, her voice unwavering as she looked directly into the judge's panicked eyes, "or you can recuse yourself from this case immediately, hand these documents over to the federal prosecutor seated in the back row, and save yourself a prison sentence for accepting bribes."
