Chapter 7: The Unraveling

No security guards moved. They stood stationed by the mahogany doors, frozen by the sheer audacity of Lin’s presence and the palpable shift in power rippling through the ballroom. They had all received anonymous digital briefs on their company-issued phones less than two minutes ago—briefs detailing the freezing of the Sterling Foundation's operational accounts.

Arthur turned around, looking toward the guards with an expression of furious disbelief, only to find them staring straight ahead, avoiding his gaze entirely. He realized then that he was completely isolated. The golden cage he had built over the past decade had locked its doors from the outside, and he was trapped inside with his own deceit.

"Security is currently busy reviewing federal indictments, Arthur," Lin said calmly, her hands resting lightly at her sides, the sequins of her dress glinting under the chandelier light. "Along with the chief compliance officer’s signed confession. The authorities were quite efficient once they received the master ledger."

A collective murmur erupted through the ballroom. Socialites and investors began whispering frantically, pulling out their smartphones to check the financial news feeds. Screens lit up across the room, displaying breaking news alerts about the freezing of Sterling assets and the ongoing federal investigation into municipal infrastructure fraud.

Arthur’s knees seemed to buckle slightly. He gripped the polished wooden banister of the white staircase for support, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The invincible titan of high finance was crumbling right before their eyes, stripped of his wealth, his influence, and his carefully curated reputation.

"You ruined everything," Arthur snarled, his voice breaking into a harsh whisper as he lunged forward a step, his face twisted in quiet fury. "I built this firm from nothing! Your father was a dreamer who didn't know how to survive in the real world!"

"My father built a legacy of integrity," Lin replied, her voice unwavering, cutting through his desperation like a blade. "You built a house of cards on the backs of hardworking people. And now, the wind is finally catching up to you."

Before Arthur could lunge again, heavy footsteps echoed from the main entrance. Two federal marshals in dark suits walked briskly into the grand ballroom, their badges gleaming under the bright lights. The crowd parted instantly, creating a clear, unobstructed path straight to the base of the white staircase where Arthur stood cornered.

Lin stepped aside, her expression entirely neutral, devoid of triumphant malice or vindictive joy. She had sought justice, not vengeance, and the scales were finally balancing themselves out.
