Chapter 10: Rebuilding the Foundation

Three months had passed since the night of the gala. The Sterling Foundation had been dissolved by federal mandate, its remaining assets liquidated and redirected into a public restitution fund managed jointly by the municipal government and independent civic trusts.
Inside the newly renovated offices of the Zhao Family Foundation on the seventeenth floor of a sleek downtown tower, sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating rows of pristine white desks and walls lined with architectural blueprints. Lin Zhao stood by the window, wearing a tailored charcoal-gray suit instead of her red gala dress, though she still wore the subtle black choker around her neck as a quiet talisman of her journey.
Below, construction crews were busy clearing the site for the new community health clinic funded by the restored patents. The air in the office was calm, filled with the productive hum of researchers, engineers, and financial advisors working toward a shared, transparent goal.
Maya walked into Lin’s office holding a thick portfolio bound in navy blue leather. "The final audit for the restitution fund cleared the federal oversight committee this morning, Lin. Every cent recovered from the offshore accounts has been successfully allocated to the community health initiatives."
Lin turned away from the window, taking the portfolio and flipping through the meticulously organized pages. Her expression was serene, grounded by the quiet satisfaction of a promise fulfilled. "And the legal challenges from Arthur’s former associates?"
"Dismissed across the board," Maya replied with a small smile. "Julian Vance’s testimony held up under cross-examination, and the federal judge ruled that the asset seizures were entirely lawful given the scope of the fraud."
Lin nodded slowly, closing the portfolio and placing it neatly on her desk. "Good. I want to make sure the first wave of medical equipment reaches the regional clinics by the end of next week. No delays, Maya. The communities have waited long enough."
"Everything is already in motion," Maya assured her, turning to leave before pausing at the doorway. "By the way, there's someone downstairs in the lobby asking to speak with you. He says it’s personal."
May you like
Lin raised an eyebrow, a flicker of curiosity crossing her features. "Did he give a name?"
"He didn't need to," Maya said quietly. "It’s Julian Vance. He just finished his debriefing with the federal prosecutor's office and wanted a moment of your time before leaving the city for good."
