Chapter 6: Descent into the Lion's Den

Lin descended the private service stairs, the damp concrete walls a stark contrast to the glittering marble of the main venue. Every step downward brought her closer to the heart of the gala, where Arthur Sterling still played the gracious host, blissfully unaware that his empire had just been dismantled stroke by stroke in a dimly lit room above.

When she pushed open the heavy brass-trimmed doors leading back into the grand ballroom, the ambient noise washed over her like a warm wave. String quartet music filled the air, mingling with the polite chatter of politicians, bankers, and corporate executives. Yet, as soon as she stepped onto the polished floor, a subtle ripple moved through the crowd. Heads turned. Conversations tapered off. The red sequined dress acted as a beacon, drawing every eye in the room toward her confident, unhurried stride.

Arthur was standing near the base of the white staircase, deep in conversation with the city’s chief financial commissioner. As the crowd parted to let Lin through, Arthur noticed the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere. He turned, his smile freezing instantly upon his face as he locked eyes with her across the crowded floor.

Lin did not rush. She walked with the deliberate poise of someone who held all the cards, her dark hair swaying gently over her bare shoulders. She could see the panic beginning to register in Arthur’s eyes—the frantic calculation of a man trying to assess how much damage she had already inflicted.

"Lin," Arthur said loudly enough for the surrounding guests to hear, forcing a veneer of jovial hospitality over his trembling voice. "I see you managed to find your way past the reception desk. I hope our little corporate archives met your expectations."

The surrounding guests exchanged uneasy glances. The tension in the air grew thick enough to choke on. They sensed a confrontation of monumental proportions unfolding before them, a clash between the city’s most untouchable tycoon and the ghost of a past he thought he had successfully buried.

"The archives were remarkably illuminating, Arthur," Lin replied, her voice carrying clearly across the quieted hall. She stopped just a few feet away from him, her gaze piercing and steady. "Though I found the offshore transfers particularly fascinating. I suppose embezzlement has a way of leaving paper trails, no matter how many shell companies you hide behind."

The commissioner beside Arthur instantly took a step back, his face draining of color as he realized he was standing too close to a sinking ship. Arthur’s face flushed a deep, mottled red, his composure finally cracking under the weight of public exposure.

"You're making baseless accusations, Zhao," Arthur hissed, stepping forward in a threatening manner, forgetting for a moment the hundreds of eyes watching his every move. "Security! Escort this woman out of the building immediately."
