Chapter 6: The Safe House

They drove for another hour through winding back roads before reaching an abandoned forestry service station fifteen miles outside Charlottesville. The building was little more than a corrugated tin shed surrounded by overgrown brush, its windows boarded up with weathered plywood. It was a dead drop Daniel had used years ago during survival training exercises before deploying overseas.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and damp concrete. Daniel used a heavy-duty tactical flashlight to illuminate the room, revealing a battered metal desk and a folding cot. Miller slumped into a rusted folding chair, holding his head in his hands, shivering from the cold and the residual shock of the ambush.

Daniel unbuttoned his soaked dress uniform jacket, draping it carefully over the back of the metal chair. Beneath it, his white dress shirt clung to his athletic frame. He pulled out Clara’s notebook and the microchip, placing them on the desk under the narrow beam of the flashlight.

"Miller. Look at me," Daniel said firmly.

The younger man lifted his head, his face pale, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes. "I shouldn't have come, Captain. I’m an analyst, not an operator. If they caught us back there—"

"They didn't catch us," Daniel interrupted, his voice steady and grounding. "And you did the right thing bringing that envelope. Now, we need to understand the scale of what we’re dealing with. Who inside the Pentagon knows about Marcus’s operation?"

Miller swallowed hard, pulling a small, encrypted tablet from the inner pocket of his trench coat. He booted the device, entering a complex biometric sequence. "A handful of mid-level directors in the cyber-command division, but they’ve been systematically neutralized or reassigned over the past six months. Marcus didn't just build a shadow directorate; he systematically purged anyone with the technical clearance to audit the Aegis code."

Daniel tapped the microchip resting on the desk. "Clara found a way past his firewall. She extracted the core protocol before they locked her out of her terminal. That’s why she was a target. This chip contains the routing keys to every domestic and international financial institution tied to Project Aegis."

"If we broadcast this data to an independent news organization or upload it to an unencrypted mirror site, the whole system collapses," Miller said, his voice laced with a mixture of professional awe and sheer terror. "Global markets would freeze within hours."

"We aren't going to crash the global economy," Daniel replied coldly. "We’re going to expose the men who murdered my wife. There’s a difference between justice and chaos."

Miller looked at Daniel with a new level of understanding. The grieving husband had vanished, replaced entirely by the methodical, disciplined soldier who knew how to wage an asymmetric war against an invisible enemy. "So, what’s the play, Captain? We can’t walk into a federal building. Every badge we own has been flagged as compromised."

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out an old, encrypted satellite phone—a secure military-grade communicator that bypassed civilian network infrastructure entirely. "We don't go to them. We call in an old favor from someone who doesn't answer to Marcus or the Oversight Compliance Group."
