Chapter 15: The Final Dawn

The following morning, before the sun had fully crested the eastern ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Daniel stood on the porch of a small, timber-framed cabin overlooking a vast expanse of rolling green hills and dense pine forests. The air was crisp and biting, carrying the sharp, clean scent of damp earth and woodsmoke from the stone fireplace inside.
He wore a plain flannel shirt and worn jeans, his hands resting on the rustic wooden railing of the porch. A steaming mug of black coffee sat on the small wooden table beside him. The silence of the mountains was absolute, unbroken by sirens, encrypted transmissions, or the cold machinery of war.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small silver token Clara had given him years ago. He looked at it in the pale morning light, tracing the worn metal edges with his thumb.
