Chapter 11: The Dark Vault

Red strobe lights cast long, frantic shadows across the concrete floor of the bunker as the air filled with the acrid smell of ozone and cordite. Bullets ricocheted off the steel filing cabinets with ear-splitting whines, sending showers of metal flakes into the air.
In the sudden darkness, Daniel rolled behind the heavy iron frame of an analog mainframe rack, bringing his sidearm up and peering through the strobing gloom. Across the room, Miller was huddled beneath the steel desk, clutching his head and trembling uncontrollably. General Travis had dropped behind a concrete pillar, clutching his cane like a weapon, while Commander Sarah Lin had managed to scramble toward the emergency override panel near the back exit.
"Marcus!" Daniel shouted over the ringing in his ears, his voice cutting through the hum of dying electronics. "Your shadow directorate ends tonight!"
Marcus didn't answer verbally. A burst of automatic gunfire chewed through the server rack inches above Daniel’s head, showering him in shredded paper and plastic debris. The private contractors were advancing methodically, using suppressive fire to corner him against the back wall.
Daniel knew he couldn't win a sustained firefight against two professional operators with superior firepower in an enclosed space. He needed to use the environment. Remembering the layout of the old Cold War facility from his briefing with Travis, Daniel recalled that the back storage room housed older analog magnetic tape archives—stacks of heavy cellulose film that were highly combustible if exposed to a spark.
He unclipped a tactical flash-bang grenade from his belt, pulled the pin with his teeth, and tossed it blindly around the corner of the server rack toward the center of the room.
BOOM.
The concussive blast echoed deafeningly off the concrete walls, accompanied by a blinding flash of white light that saturated the red strobes. Shouts of disorientation echoed from the contractors as the flash-bang temporarily blinded and deafened them.
"Now, Sarah! Hit the halon dump!" Daniel roared.
Sarah slammed her fist down on the emergency fire-suppression lever near the exit. A heavy hiss filled the air as the halon gas system flooded the main vault, displacing oxygen and creating a thick, blinding fog that choked out the remaining embers from the electrical fire.

Taking advantage of the confusion, Daniel bolted from his cover, sprinting low across the floor toward the console. His hand swept across the metal surface, his fingers brushing against the cold plastic of the microchip. He grabbed it just as a dark figure lunged out of the smoke toward him.
It was one of the contractors. The man swung the butt of his assault rifle in a vicious arc aimed at Daniel’s head. Daniel ducked beneath the blow, driving his shoulder squarely into the contractor’s chest, sending both of them crashing hard onto the concrete floor.
