Chapter 7

The warehouse grew deathly quiet once Evelyn's sedan sped away into the night. Mark waited a full ten minutes, listening to the drip of a leaky pipe somewhere in the rafters, before emerging from behind the crates. He crept toward the cluttered desk illuminated by a single gooseneck desk lamp.

The paperwork scattered across the scarred wooden surface was a treasure trove of corruption. Shipping labels, bank transfer slips, and internal email printouts detailed a systematic operation. Equipment donated by charitable trusts across the tri-county area was routinely marked as "destroyed in transit" or "medically obsolete," only to be laundered through shell companies and resold to private buyers at five times the original value.

Mark pulled his phone from his pocket, switching off the flash, and began snapping rapid, high-resolution photographs of every manifest and ledger page in sight. His hands trembled slightly—not from fear, but from the sheer anger boiling up inside him. Children like Clara and Leo were suffering through bureaucratic nightmares while women like Evelyn lined their pockets by hijacking the very tools that gave disabled kids their independence.

A sudden noise near the front entrance froze Mark in his tracks. A heavy padlock rattled, and the latch began to turn. Someone was coming back.

Panic surged, but Mark forced himself to remain calm. He grabbed a handful of critical invoices, stuffed them into his jacket pocket, and slipped behind a towering pallet of medical supplies just as the side door creaked open.

"Did you leave the back ledger here, Mrs. Hayes?" a gruff voice asked.

A second man stepped into the light, holding a heavy-duty flashlight. It was one of the utility workers who had accompanied Brenda Vance to their house earlier that morning. He scanned the desk, muttered to himself, and picked up a stray coffee mug.

Mark held his breath, pressing his back flat against the cold metal shelving. The seconds stretched into an eternity. If he was caught here, trespassing and stealing evidence, Evelyn’s corrupt network would ensure he was arrested, discredited, and stripped of his custody rights before sunrise. The stakes couldn't possibly have been higher.
