Chapter 12

The lobby cleared out within minutes as onlookers and administrative staff retreated to their offices in stunned disbelief. Officer Miller lingered near the entrance, rubbing the back of his neck with a weary hand. He walked over to Mark and Clara, offering a solemn nod of respect.

"I had no idea," Officer Miller said quietly, looking down at Clara. "If I had known what those audits were covering up, I would have handled things differently on the school grounds last week."

"You did your job based on the information you had, Officer," Clara replied gently, her voice steady and forgiving. "What matters is that the truth finally came out."

Sarah Jenkins walked up from the side corridor, holding a notepad and smiling broadly. "The attorney general's office is preparing a full press release for the evening news. This is going to trigger federal investigations into similar boards across three neighboring states. You two just broke open a nationwide ring."

Mark let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension of the past week finally draining from his frame. He reached down and rested his hand on Clara’s shoulder. "We didn't do it for a headline, Sarah. We just wanted to keep our lives intact."

"Well, your lives are intact," Sarah said, giving Clara’s wheelchair a light, affectionate tap. "And that chair isn't going anywhere ever again."

As they stepped outside into the crisp afternoon air, the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow across the valley. The yellow school buses were pulling out of the lot, their engines humming a steady, peaceful tune as they transported the children home. For the first time in months, the future felt open, secure, and entirely their own.
