Chapter 14

"I should get going," Clara said gently, glancing down at her watch. "Dinner is waiting at home, and I have early rounds tomorrow morning."
"Of course," Maya replied, standing up from her chair and adjusting her canvas bag. "Thank you for stopping, Clara. It really is good to see you looking so at peace."
"You too, Maya. Keep doing the work," Clara said, offering a final, respectful nod.
With that, Clara turned and continued down the sidewalk toward her apartment, her brown heeled boots clicking steadily against the pavement. She didn't look back this time either, but the absence of looking back felt entirely different today. It wasn't born of bitterness or escape; it was born of closure. She had reclaimed her life, her career, and her peace of mind from the wreckage of a broken foundation.

Maya watched Clara walk away until she blended into the evening pedestrian crowd. She felt a profound sense of sadness mingled with a deep, enduring relief. The chapter of their shared life together was firmly closed, neatly bound, and placed on the shelf of history. Yet, as she sat back down at the table and reopened her textbook, Maya knew her own personal story was only just beginning to find its true footing.
The sun dipped below the city skyline, casting a warm amber glow over the downtown streets. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the undeniable promise of a fresh season ahead. Maya turned the page of her book, her mind clear and focused, ready to face whatever came next in her unvarnished, honest life.
