Chapter 10

The afternoon sun cast long, angular shadows through the uncurtained windows of the empty living room. The air felt sterile, carrying only the faint scent of fresh paint and industrial cleaner. There was nothing left to pack, nothing left to discuss, and no more excuses to delay the inevitable departure.
Clara walked over to her suitcases by the front door, her grip tightening on the retractable handle. She looked back at Maya one last time. The woman standing across the room in her simple light blue t-shirt and black pants was the same person she had loved for a decade, yet she felt entirely like a stranger. The betrayal had created an unbridgeable chasm, but the shared grief of their dissolution bound them in a strange, silent solidarity.
"I suppose this is goodbye, then," Clara said, her voice remaining steady and controlled, avoiding any dramatic theatrics.
Maya stepped forward, stopping a few feet away, respecting the physical boundary Clara had established. "Goodbye, Clara. Thank you for... for ten years of honesty, even when the ending was brutal."
Clara offered a faint, melancholy nod. She turned the latch on the front door, pulling it open to reveal the bright suburban sunlight outside. Without another word, she wheeled her luggage down the front steps and across the concrete walkway toward the waiting taxi at the curb. She did not look back.

Maya stood in the empty doorway, watching the taxi’s brake lights flash as it pulled away from the curb and disappeared down the quiet street. The house was completely silent now, save for the faint, distant hum of neighborhood traffic. She closed the front door behind her, locking it for the very last time, and walked down the steps toward her own car parked in the driveway.
Driving away from the house, Maya felt a hollow emptiness in her chest, but beneath the grief, there was also a strange sense of clarity. The deception that had poisoned her life for years was finally out in the open, stripped of its secrecy. She was starting over with zero assets, a tarnished reputation, and a mountain of personal work ahead of her, but for the first time in a very long time, she was living in the unvarnished truth.
