Chapter 9

The sharp, metallic smell of gunpowder hung heavy in the damp air of the abandoned distribution depot as the tactical team pressed forward into the cavernous darkness. Marcus stayed close behind the lead detective, his boots echoing against the concrete floor as they navigated past towering stacks of empty wooden pallets. The flickering security light overhead cast erratic, shifting shadows that made every corner look like a threat.

"Clear!" the lead officer shouted from the far corner of the warehouse, signaling that the lower level was empty.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the elevated catwalks above. Everyone looked up just in time to see a dark figure scrambling along the rusted metal grating toward the emergency exit stairs at the back of the building. It was Terrell, his white tank top smeared with grease and dirt, clutching the heavy canvas duffel bag tightly against his chest with one hand and holding the firearm in the other.

"Drop the weapon, Vance! You're completely surrounded!" the detective commanded, raising her service pistol toward the catwalk.

Terrell paused at the top of the metal stairs, panting heavily, his eyes wild and desperate. He looked down at the squad of armed officers below, then spotted Marcus standing near the front of the formation. A bitter, defeated smirk crossed Terrell’s face. He knew the game was over. There was no train left to catch, no highway left to run.

"You ruined everything, kid," Terrell shouted down, his voice echoing off the corrugated tin roof. "I was going to set your mother and you up for life! You could have had everything!"

"By stealing and lying?" Marcus yelled back, stepping forward into the open so Terrell could see him clearly. "That's not a life, Terrell. That's a cage. Just like the one you're about to spend the rest of your days in."

Terrell raised the pistol, leveling the barrel not at the police, but toward the large overhead electrical transformer box mounted directly beside the catwalk. Before anyone could process his intent, Terrell fired two rapid shots into the housing unit. A blinding shower of blue electrical sparks erupted across the ceiling, plunging the entire warehouse into total darkness as the main breaker blew with a deafening pop.

Chaos erupted in the pitch black. Shouts bounced off the walls, flashlights clicked on and cut erratic beams through the smoke, and heavy footsteps clattered frantically across the metal stairs as Terrell made his final, desperate bid for freedom in the dark.
