Chapter 1

The air inside the cramped living room felt dense, heavy with the unspoken weight of years of financial suffocation. Marcus stood near the center of the worn carpet, the thick stack of hundred-dollar bills burning against his palm like a hot coal. He looked down at the paper currency, then shifted his gaze toward his mother, Elena, who clutched her own smaller wad of cash with white-knuckled desperation. Just a few feet away, Marcus’s stepfather, Terrell, lingered by the kitchen archway, his arms crossed over his chest, wearing a white tank top and grey sweatpants that emphasized his brooding, territorial stance. Marcus kept his voice low, steady, but dripping with a bitterness that had fermented over months of working double shifts at the shipping warehouse.
"They go to 400 for rent. How much you pay?" Marcus demanded, his eyes fixed on the mother who had raised him to be honest, yet seemingly expected him to finance a man who contributed nothing.
Elena froze, her long dark wavy hair shifting as she turned her head slightly. She looked directly at her eighteen-year-old son with a hard, defensive glare.
"Who?" she snapped back, her voice defensive and sharp.
Marcus didn't flinch. He let out a dry, humorless laugh, feeling Terrell step up closer from behind him, casting a menacing shadow over his shoulders.
"Your man, he live here too," Marcus said, his tone dropping an octave as Terrell leaned in, breathing down his neck with a stern, threatening look.
Elena stepped forward, standing face-to-face with Marcus in the small living room, the tension snapping like a taut guitar string.
"That's my man," Elena whispered fiercely.
"And I'm your son," Marcus shot back instantly.

Terrell stepped directly into Marcus’s personal space, shoving a finger into the young man’s chest and whispering that if he didn't hand over his entire paycheck, he would find his clothes out on the street by midnight. Marcus looked straight into Terrell’s eyes, refusing to back down an inch, but as he shifted his gaze back to his mother for support, Elena deliberately turned away, refusing to defend her own blood.
Terrell smirked, reaching out and forcefully snatching half the cash right out of Marcus's hand.
