Chapter 13

The patrol cruiser pulled up to the curb outside the small apartment building, its headlights cutting through the steady drizzle. Marcus stepped out into the damp night air, his steps heavy as he climbed the familiar concrete stairs to the front door. The lock had been forced open earlier by the police, leaving the door slightly ajar, swinging gently on its hinges with a hollow squeak. He pushed it open and stepped inside the living room.

Elena was sitting alone on the worn sofa, her dark red button-down shirt wrinkled, her hands folded tightly in her lap. The room was dark, illuminated only by the amber streetlights filtering through the window blinds. She didn't look up as Marcus entered, as if she had been sitting there waiting for this exact moment since the police first knocked on the door hours ago.

"They caught David at the bus depot," Marcus said quietly, his voice echoing in the silent room. "He told me everything, Ma. The farm, the debts, the drops... all of it."

Elena slowly raised her head, her eyes red-rimmed and filled with a profound, crushing sorrow. She looked older, fragile, the iron mask of defiance completely gone.

"I tried to protect you, Marcus," Elena whispered, her voice cracking. "I didn't want you to know what it took to keep us afloat. When your father left us with nothing, I had to do whatever it took to keep a roof over your head and pay for your schooling."

"By letting a criminal steal my wages and turn our home into a hideout?" Marcus stepped closer, his voice breaking with anguish. "That wasn't protection, Ma. That was a prison. You sacrificed our honesty for safety that was never real."

Elena stood up slowly, walking over to the small coffee table where the last few stray dollar bills lay scattered. She picked up a single bill, holding it between her trembling fingers. "Honesty doesn't pay the medical bills when you're sick, Marcus. Honesty doesn't keep the lights on when the winter freeze hits. I made terrible choices, and I know I can't undo them. But everything I did, I did so you wouldn't have to live the way I did."

"And look where it got us," Marcus replied, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes as he looked around the room that no longer felt like a home. "Terrell is on the run, Uncle David is in custody, and the police are coming back here for you."

As if on cue, the heavy sound of approaching vehicle doors slamming shut echoed from the street below, followed by the steady, heavy tread of boots climbing the exterior stairs toward the apartment. Elena closed her eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath as she placed the bill back down on the table and calmly held out her wrists toward the open doorway.

Before the officers could cross the threshold, Marcus stepped forward and wrapped his arms tightly around his mother in a fierce, forgiving embrace.
