Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Secrets

The mention of the farm loans hit Elena like a physical blow, driving the air straight out of her lungs. She stumbled backward, her hand catching the edge of a mahogany table to steady herself. How could Julian know about the hidden debt? She had spent months systematically burying the paper trail, using shell companies and blind trusts to siphon funds from her family’s struggling real estate holdings directly into the failing agricultural accounts tied to Clara’s land.

Marcus didn't wait for her to recover her balance. He slipped out into the hallway, the heavy ballroom doors clicking shut behind him with a finality that echoed like a prison cell door.

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She pulled her phone from her clutch with trembling fingers and dialed her father’s private number. It rang four times before going straight to voicemail. She tried her lawyer, Richard Vance, the sharp-tongued legal shark who had drafted the ironclad prenuptial agreement. Vance picked up on the second ring, his tone remarkably frosty compared to his usual obsequious demeanor.

“Mr. Vance, we have a crisis,” Elena blurted out, pacing frantically across the parquet floor, her wedding dress rustling loudly in the quiet room. “Julian has frozen the accounts and mentioned the farm loans. You told me the financial architecture was completely bulletproof!”

“It was bulletproof against ordinary scrutiny, Miss Vance,” Vance replied smoothly, the sound of rustling papers coming clearly through the receiver. “However, it appears your former fiancé retained a forensic accounting team months ago. They didn’t just look at the pre-nup; they traced the asset transfers all the way back to the initial mortgage restructuring on Mrs. Miller’s rural property.”

Elena stopped pacing. A cold sweat broke out along the back of her neck. “Months ago? But we only got engaged six months ago!”

“Correction, Miss Vance. You accepted his proposal six months ago. But according to these files, Julian began investigating your family’s corporate liabilities the very week you were introduced at the charity gala,” Vance said, his voice dripping with professional detachment. “He knew about your impending bankruptcy before he ever slipped that diamond onto your finger. In legal terms, you didn’t just lose a husband today. You’re currently exposed to multiple counts of wire fraud and misrepresentation.”

The phone slipped from Elena’s numb fingers, clattering loudly against the wooden floorboards. She stared down at the screen, which was still lit with the active call.

Suddenly, the ballroom’s side service door creaked open, breaking her trance. A tall figure stepped out from the shadows near the catering staging area, holding a thick manila folder.
