Chapter 1 - The Altar of Broken Vows “Don’t hug me. You smell like a farm. Stay away from me.”

Elena’s voice cut through the cavernous limestone sanctuary like shattered glass, stripping the sacred air from the high vaulted ceilings of St. Jude’s.
Clara froze halfway through her maternal embrace, her arms still outstretched in a gesture of pure, unguarded affection. The soft fabric of her light blue dress rustled as she stepped back, her silver hair catching the amber noon light filtering through the stained-glass windows. She offered a trembling, understanding smile, desperately trying to shield her pride beneath decades of quiet dignity.
Julian stood frozen beside his new bride, his black tuxedo rigid, his white dress shirt collar suddenly feeling like a tourniquet. A muscle twitched violently along his jawline as he stared at the woman he had sworn to love until death did them part.
“Apologize to my mother,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that brooked no argument.
Elena scoffed, rolling her eyes as she tossed her long dark hair over her lace-adorned shoulder, the heavy pearls in her ears catching the candlelight and throwing cold reflections against her flushed skin.
“It was just a joke,” Elena snapped, shaking her head with an annoyed, dismissive huff. She crossed her arms tightly over the intricate white lace of her designer gown, completely unbothered by the gasps echoing from the front pews where close friends and relatives sat in stunned silence.
Clara gently placed a trembling hand on her son’s arm, her eyes wide with a plea for peace.
“Charles, let it go,” Clara murmured softly, using the childhood nickname only she and the closest family members dared to utter, hoping to quell the rising storm before it consumed them all.
Julian looked down at his mother’s hand, then back up at his bride. His dark eyes hardened into chips of obsidian. He turned his full, unblinking gaze onto Elena, the air in the church growing suffocatingly thick.
“Take off the ring,” Julian commanded, his voice eerily calm, cutting straight to the bone. “This wedding is over.”
May you like
Elena’s jaw dropped, her mouth opening in silent disbelief as a slow-motion wave of panic washed over her arrogant features. Julian slowly reached out his hand, palm up, demanding the family heirloom back.
