Chapter 15 - The Unfinished Horizon

Julian stopped a few paces away, his dark eyes fixed on Elena as she slowly rose to her feet, her hands blackened with grease and her trench coat caked in clay. He didn't look at his mother; his gaze remained locked on the woman who had once stood at his side in a designer lace gown at St. Jude’s altar.
“The final corporate liquidation papers cleared the federal courts this morning,” Julian said, his voice resonant and steady across the quiet farmyard. “Your family’s assets are fully seized, restructured, and distributed to the victim restitution fund.”
Elena nodded slowly, wiping her palms against her stained trousers. She felt no anger, no panic—only a strange, hollow peace. “I know. Arthur told me the terms.”
Julian slowly lowered the manila envelope, keeping his grip tight. He pulled a small, heavy velvet box from his pocket with his other hand, flipping the lid open with his thumb. Inside rested the exact same gold band he had demanded she remove at the altar—the family heirloom that had started the entire cascade of revelations.
“When I walked out of that church, I thought I was ending a fraud,” Julian said softly, his voice dropping into a register meant only for her ears. “I thought destroying your world would finally quiet the ghosts of my past.”
