Chapter 8 - The Smashed Mug

The sound of shattering ceramic echoed through the hollow hallway like an explosion. Sarah cried out, her footsteps pounding frantically against the bare subfloor as she rounded the corner into the kitchen. Arthur and I followed closely behind, our hearts hammering against our ribs, while Agent Vance moved with the calculated, slow precision of a trained hunter holding a drawn weapon.
When we reached the kitchen threshold, the sight before us made my breath catch in my throat. The room was completely stripped of appliances, cabinets, and countertops, exposing gray concrete walls covered in chalky federal evidence markers. In the very center of the bare floor lay a shattered white ceramic mug, its dark coffee pooling across the dust like a fresh stain. Wisps of steam still rose from the dark puddle, and beside it lay a single, handwritten note written on corporate letterhead.
Mark stood frozen by the shattered window, his hands bloody from where he had punched through the single pane of glass that led out to the overgrown backyard. He was staring down at the note on the floor, his chest heaving as if he had just run a marathon.
"Mark! Are you okay? Did you cut yourself badly?" Sarah rushed to his side, grabbing his bleeding hand with a look of absolute terror, ignoring the mess around them.
"I didn't touch the glass," Mark whispered, his voice hollow and detached, his eyes wide as saucers. "It... it blew outward from the inside. Like an air pressure change."
Agent Vance stepped into the center of the kitchen, ignoring Mark's bleeding hand entirely as he knelt down to inspect the single piece of paper lying beside the coffee puddle. He didn't pick it up immediately; instead, he used the barrel of his service pistol to slide the letter over so the ink was fully visible under the weak afternoon light filtering through the broken window.
Written in neat, precise cursive that matched the signature on the ledger in the front room was a single sentence: 'They aren't looking for the money, Arthur. They're looking for the third vault.'
Arthur staggered backward, his face turning an alarming shade of gray as his hand groped blindly behind him until it found the edge of a bare door frame to steady himself. "There... there is no third vault," the old man rasped, his voice trembling violently for the first time since we arrived. "The board liquidated everything during the 2018 audit. The federal government took every single penny."

Vance slowly stood up, sliding his pistol back into its holster with a sharp click. He looked directly at Arthur, his blue eyes narrowing with quiet menace. "Then why did the structural blueprints we recovered from the Cayman server show a hidden subterranean room built directly beneath this kitchen foundation—a room that requires a biometric scan from a member of the Vance family to unlock?"
