Chapter 5 - The Turning Latch

The metallic click of the internal latch releasing echoed in the humid air with the clarity of a gunshot. None of us breathed. The doorknob remained frozen in its turned position, the brass shining mockingly in the late afternoon sun as if inviting us to cross a threshold we suddenly weren't sure we wanted to breach.
Mark instinctively took a protective step backward, pulling young Toby closer behind his leg. The boy whimpered softly, dropping his blue rolled-up mat onto the dusty floorboards with a dull thud. Sarah dropped the dead phone entirely, letting it clatter against the wooden slats while her hands flew to cover her mouth to stifle a rising gasp.
Arthur squared his shoulders, stepping past Mark to take the lead position. His blue button-down shirt pulled taut across his chest as he reached out with a steady, unhesitating hand and grasped the warm brass knob. "If you're in there, show your face," Arthur demanded, his voice ringing with a fierce, protective authority that silenced the buzzing cicadas in the nearby bushes. "We're not running anymore."
The door didn't swing wide open; instead, it inched inward by precisely two inches, releasing a wave of chilled air that smelled faintly of old paper, pipe tobacco, and peppermint—a scent that belonged to one specific person who was supposed to be three thousand miles away living under an assumed name.
"Dad?" Mark breathed, the word escaping his lips as an involuntary whisper of pure disbelief.
A hand reached out from the gloom of the hallway, pale and steady, gripping the edge of the door frame. It wore a familiar silver signet ring on the pinky finger—the exact ring David had pawned during the worst of the crisis three winters ago.

"You shouldn't have come back this weekend," a raspy, unfamiliar voice murmured from the shadows, stepping partially into the sliver of light. It wasn't David. It was an older man with silver-streaked hair and a jagged scar across his cheek, wearing David’s old jacket. "The federal marshals cleared this property for demolition two hours ago. You're standing in an active federal crime scene."
