Chapter 11 - The Closing Blast Door

The heavy steel blast door ground against its tracks with a screech of tortured metal, moving with terrifying speed toward the locked position at the base of the staircase.

"No! Stop it!" Mark yelled, lunging forward before Agent Vance could grab his jacket. Mark leaped down onto the first two steps of the industrial metal staircase, throwing his weight against the descending steel slab with his bare hands.

The impact sent a violent jolt up his arms, but the steel didn't even shudder. It continued its relentless crawl, driven by hydraulic actuators with hundreds of pounds of force behind them. The gap narrowed from six feet to four, then two, then a mere sliver of amber light leaking from the subterranean chamber below.

"Mark, get out of there!" Sarah screamed from the hallway, dropping to her knees with Toby crying in her arms as she watched her son risk his life against the heavy machinery.

Agent Vance holstered his weapon with a sharp snap and lunged down the stairs, grabbing the back of Mark's blue t-shirt with both hands and yanking him backward with brute force just as the steel door slammed shut with a definitive, bone-rattling thud.

The two men tumbled backward onto the concrete kitchen floor, gasping for breath as the subterranean hum died away into an eerie, absolute silence. The kitchen was once again just a stripped, empty shell of a room, save for the massive steel plate now embedded flush into the concrete floor where the gap had been.

Mark pushed himself up onto his hands and knees, wiping a streak of sweat and drywall dust from his forehead. He stared at the seamless steel plate, his chest heaving as adrenaline slowly faded into cold, heavy defeat. "It's locked," he panted, his voice trembling slightly. "There's no seam, no handle, no keypad. Nothing."

Vance stood up slowly, dusting off his slacks with a calculated calm that drove Mark crazy. The federal agent walked over to the steel plate, pressing his boot against the metal surface. "That wasn't an automated lockdown," Vance said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "The sequence was manually triggered from a remote terminal. Someone down there knew we found the entrance, and they just sealed the primary exit."

Arthur stepped forward slowly into the kitchen, his face pale and drawn. He looked down at the metal plate with eyes that seemed to age ten years in a matter of seconds. "David isn't dead," the old man said, his voice barely audible over the hum of the distant refrigerator. "And he hasn't been hiding down there alone."

Sarah climbed to her feet, holding Toby tightly against her hip. She glared at her father-in-law, her voice shaking with a mixture of terror and fury. "What are you talking about, Arthur? Who else could possibly be down there?"

Before Arthur could answer, a loud, high-pitched electronic beep echoed from the hallway outside the kitchen, followed by the sound of the front door deadbolt clicking back into place.
