Chapter 9 - The Collapsed Tunnel

The damp air grew thinner and colder as Leo pushed the blue wheelchair deeper into the branching aqueduct, his breathing coming in ragged gasps. The distant sounds of gunfire had faded into a haunting silence, replaced only by the steady drip of water and the frantic thud of his own running shoes against the stone floor.

Inside the chair, his mother gripped the armrests, her body tensing as another severe contraction hit her. She let out a sharp, stifled cry, her head falling back against the cushion.

"Leo... I can't go any further," she gasped, her voice barely a whisper. "The baby is coming right now. We have to stop."

Leo skidded to a halt, looking around frantically in the dim light of his phone's flashlight. They were in a wider chamber where the old brickwork gave way to raw, jagged stone. Ahead of them, the tunnel abruptly ended in a massive pile of rubble and collapsed earth, blocking the path entirely.

"No, no, no!" Leo cried out, dropping to his knees beside the blue wheelchair. "Dead end! Mom, what do we do? The path is blocked!"

His mother closed her eyes, taking deep, shuddering breaths as she tried to regain control. "Check... check the base of the chair, Leo. There's a manual override latch on the left wheel hub. Your father said if we were ever trapped, the frame has an emergency shelter mode."

Leo’s hands shook violently as he reached down to the designated wheel hub, his fingers searching along the painted blue metal for a hidden seam. His mind raced back to the warning officers Miller and Davis had given them. If the asset inside the wheelchair was activated, it would broadcast their exact GPS coordinates to every federal agency and mercenary group in the tri-state area.

"If I open this, they'll find us instantly," Leo said, looking up at his mother with wide, terrified eyes.

"We don't have a choice," she replied firmly, her maternal instinct cutting through the fear. "Your brother or sister is about to be born right here on this cold floor. Do it, Leo."

Leo pressed his thumb into the hidden latch with all his weight. With a loud, pneumatic hiss, a section of the floor beneath the wheelchair popped open, revealing a compact, reinforced carbon-fiber shelter compartment built directly into the floor beneath the chair's chassis.

Before Leo could help his mother slide out of the chair and into the shelter, a blinding beam of white light cut through the darkness behind them, accompanied by the cold, metallic click of a rifle bolt being pulled back.
